About us

Garland is where things are made. Products, careers and opportunities are made here. Friendships that last a lifetime are made here, and generations of families have made this part of Texas their home. As early as the mid-1800s, settlers began arriving in what is now Garland. The pioneers found the black soil ideal for cotton and the communities of Duck Creek and Embree thrived on that crop. In 1886, two railroad lines built depots in the area. Eventually those two communities combined and became Garland, officially incorporated in 1891. Garland enjoys a rich history that has shaped it into the thriving metropolitan-area city that offers its residents and businesses a high quality of life, excellent educational and workforce development opportunities, and is enhanced by community leadership and partners. Garland is proud of its affordable and business-friendly climate.

Garland was honored with a June 19 reception at the Governor’s Mansion, hosted by Texas first lady Cecilia Abbott and Keep Texas Beautiful Board of Directors. A proclamation signed by Governor Greg Abbott recognizing Garland’s dedication to environmental and community improvement was proudly received at the reception celebrating the winners of the 2024 Governor’s Community Achievement Award. During the presentation Keep Texas Beautiful respectfully recognized the work and dedication of the late Betty Roberts, who led Keep Garland Beautiful as president for 12 years and paved the way for Garland’s victory. The award celebrates 10 Texas communities for their achievements in seven areas: community leadership and coordination, public awareness and outreach, environmental education, beautification and community improvement, litter prevention and cleanup, solid waste management, and litter law and illegal dumping enforcement. Winning communities will collaborate with the Texas Department of Transportation to install a landscaping project along a TxDOT thoroughfare. This award is presented by Keep Texas Beautiful and TXDOT.
