Bringing the best of community life to our citizens and visitors.

About us

Algona provides all the benefits of small-town living, and continues to go above and beyond when it comes to offering city services, programs and amenities. Algona is a full-service community, including police, fire, public works, municipal airport, EMS, library, and parks and recreation departments. The city is governed by the Mayor and a six-member city council. The council appoints a full-time city administrator who is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations and supervising city personnel. With a population of approximately 5,500 people, Algona continues to thrive, grow and change, with high volunteer engagement from local citizens and strong financial support from generous individuals, businesses and service clubs for projects and events that benefit the community as a whole. Algona is home to the Band Day Festival in October, Founder’s Day celebration in July, and the Kossuth County Fair in August. Many other seasonal events are held throughout the year. Many of these are led by the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce, including the Algona Bacon Fest, live outdoor music at Party in the Park, and a holiday kickoff downtown at Live Greeting Card windows. As a community, Algona takes pride in its school system and students and offers both a public and private option for families from pre-school through 12th grade.
