About us
Chugachmiut is an Alaska Native tribal organization, and its name means “people of the Chugach Region.” Chugachmiut is an Alaska Native 501(c)(3) non-profit agency that was incorporated in 1974 to serve the seven Native tribes in the Chugach Region. A seven-member Board of Directors governs Chugachmiut, with each board member selected by their tribal government. The Board of Directors appoints the Executive Director, who manages the day-to-day operations of the organization. The Board of Directors has adopted the mission and vision statement to guide the organization. Chugachmiut provides a wide range of health services in Seward, Port Graham, Nanwalek, Chenega, and Tatitlek. These services include urgent, emergency, primary, diabetes, pharmacy, dental, nutrition, health education, case management, and tobacco prevention services. Additionally, Chugachmiut offers services under its Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Compact and other grants. They collaborate with regional tribes to secure funding in areas such as economic infrastructure, healthcare, heritage and language preservation, behavioral health, Information Technology, and Self-Governance. Chugachmiut manages resources that include compacts with the Indian Health Service (IHS), and the IHS compact is negotiated on behalf of five of the tribes. The Native Village of Eyak is a signatory to the Alaska Tribal Health Compact, and the Valdez Native Tribe administers an IHS contract. The DOI/BIA compact is negotiated on behalf of five of the seven tribes (excluding Valdez and Eyak), and the majority of the compact funds are allocated to the tribal councils for local management. Various programs and services receive funding from the State of Alaska, multiple federal agencies, and private foundations. Chugachmiut actively seeks funding for programs, services, functions, and activities that benefit any combination of the seven tribes in the Region.
