CHOC recently earned national recognition for our approach to treating jaundice in newborns. The honor comes after CHOC's participation in an 18-month effort by the American Academy of Pediatrics (#AAP) to improve quality of care for babies born with elevated levels of bilirubin. CHOC is proud of Clinical Research Supervisor Angelyque Lorenzana for the impact she is making on epilepsy research. Most recently, she was elected to the board of directors of the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium, a collaborative of more than 75 U.S. epilepsy centers and over 350 pediatric epileptologists, neuropsychologists, and pediatric epilepsy researchers. Angelyque's board appointment is a sign of CHOC's growing reputation as a leading center for pediatric epilepsy research. #pediatrics #pediatricreseach #epilepsy #defendersofchildhood

Craig Cherf, senior preconstruction director at McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., has a deep and personal connection to CHOC. After overseeing the construction of the Bill Holmes Tower in 2010, his journey took an unexpected turn when his son, Jackson, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). After 3 years in and out of CHOC’s expert care at the Hyundai Cancer Institute, Jackson is now cancer free and just recently celebrated his high school graduation. Today on Father’s Day, he is celebrating his dad. “He always has been there for me, no matter what,” Jackson says. Craig has been a member of the CHOC Corporate Partnerships Committee since 2015, working to attract new donors and introduce programs, and is currently on his second major project at CHOC, overseeing the construction of the new Southwest Tower set to open in Summer 2025. “Being a part of CHOC is a highlight of my life and my family’s lives” says Craig. CHOC’s colorectal program recently performed a landmark robotic surgery on a 14-year-old patient with Crohn’s disease, marking the first time that a complicated gastrointestinal case has been performed at CHOC from start to finish using the da Vinci robotic surgical system. Robotic surgery is minimally invasive and gives the benefits of smaller incisions and less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and recovery time, and less blood loss and pain than traditional surgery. After his four-hour procedure called an ileocecectomy, patient Jacob Hernandez Gonzales says he is feeling great and was even able to attend a spring trip to the east coast with his eighth-grade classmates shortly after his procedure. Jacob has since resumed his jiu-jitsu classes and is excited to begin high school this fall and play drums in the marching band. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g9PV69Jz

In honor of #WorldBloodDonorDay, please consider becoming a CHOC blood donor hero! A single donation can save up to five lives. CHOC relies on volunteer blood donors to meet the needs of our patients. When you donate blood or platelets to CHOC, your donation stays here and goes directly to patients in need. If you are interested and eligible to donate, please contact CHOC’s Blood Bank at 714-509-8339 or donatebloodforkids@choc.org. Visit choc.org/donateblood to learn more.
