Chinese staff, working in an unfamiliar country, can be vulnerable in different ways. Zhou, a worker in his late 50s, came to Gunbuster in 2021 from Hunan province to work in construction. Soon after he arrived, he said, he was struck by a rock falling from an excavator. (Gunbuster said it had no comment on Zhou’s account.) Bleeding, he took the day off work—and later learned that his pay had been docked. Zhou said that after he complained, three men woke him and began beating him until he passed out. He eventually went to a hospital; a medical report he shared with Businessweek indicated that he was diagnosed with a suspected skull fracture. But Zhou said that his superiors refused to let him stay for treatment. He eventually made it back to China, where he sent a letter to local officials describing his experience. He said he never received a response. https://lnkd.in/du24JHfE
About us
Founded in 2000, China Labor Watch is an independent not-for-profit organization. In the past ten years, CLW has collaborated with unions, labor organizations and the media to conduct a series of in-depth assessments of factories in China that produce toys, bikes, shoes, furniture, clothing, and electronics for some of the largest U.S. companies. CLW’s New York office creates reports from these investigations, educates the international community on supply chain labor issues, and pressures corporations to improve conditions for workers. Meanwhile, CLW’s Shenzhen office works closely with local factories and services migrant workers in Guangdong through free Legal Consulting Hotline Program, Community Training in collective bargaining, and Train the Trainer Prgram to enhance the local capacity in labor movements.

In response to a series of distressing incidents and media reports exposing labor abuses within global supply chains, a coalition of concerned organizations and individuals has today called upon the Responsible Business Alliance Business Alliance (RBA) to instigate meaningful reform. Incidents include the tragic death of workers, significant protests, media reports detailing forced Uyghur labor, migrant workers in debt bondage and students working 12 hour days all underscore the urgent need for action by the RBA and its members to address systemic labor issues. This letter outlines a structured analysis of recurring violations observed within industries that include RBA members. These violations range from excessive overtime and low wages to unethical recruitment practices and forced labor. Concluding the letter is a series of recommendations aimed at reshaping corporate accountability within the global supply chain and amongst RBA and its members’ companies. These recommendations advocate for increased transparency, more consequences for non-compliant member companies and the establishment of independent grievance mechanisms. Moreover, calls are made for enhanced representation of worker advocates within the RBA’s governance structure and the implementation of outcome-based reporting to assess the real impact of corporate initiatives. There is a need for reform to stop persistent violations within the industry.

China Should Be Held to Account for Its Companies’ Labor Abuses Abroad The CCP exerts significant control even over notionally private firms operating overseas. Sadly, Chinese citizens’ well-being seems to be the only area that that control does not penetrate.https://https://lnkd.in/ezieHJwj
