The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota is the catalyst for building a stronger, more vibrant community around play.

About us

The Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota is full of opportunities for discovery, development, and hands-on play. The Museum is many things: a mission, a place, and an organization -- but it is entirely devoted to serving children, families, and the greater community. The Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota features exhibits, activities, and spaces to engage all ages. From the Betsy Tacy-inspired Play Porch to the mind-inspiring attractions of the Two Level Makers Space, and with a towering Mankato Clinic Tree of Forts Climber so tall that it burst through the roof, there's plenty to do and see -- all within a safe, inviting, and comfortable space. The Children's Museum of Minnesota exists thanks to the support of dozens of businesses, hundreds of families, many wonderful volunteers, and the entire Greater Mankato community. With the continued help and enthusiasm of all who have supported us, we can't wait to put smiles on many more faces -- for generations to come.

Updates

  • Fall Early Experience Registration is now open! CMSM’s Curiosity Camps: Early Experience is an early learning experience inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach which believes in children’s innate capacity to wonder, hypothesize, investigate, and ignite their own learning journey. Facilitators will observe and provoke thoughtful investigations to follow the emergent interests of children within the Museum and carefully design play-based experiences that support children’s exploration of materials, environments, relationships and ideas. This is also an opportunity to practice adult/parent separation time. https://ow.ly/z9Ao50Sl8y3 Scholarships, presented by Xcel Energy Foundation, are available for families experiencing barriers.

  • From 9:30-11am on the 2nd Wednesday each month the Young Explorer Program activities are inspired by one of the six areas of wellness (Move, Relax, Eat Well, Sleep, Maintain, Discover) MCHS Family Medicine and Pediatrics providers support the program activities by sharing tips and information during sessions, and being available for questions while CMSM staff lead the program’s hands-on activities for children. This event is included with a Museum Membership or a daily admission.

  • Meet the Staff: Alyssa & Claire! Our Playworkers have the most important job - PLAY! When you see these friendly faces, you will find them helping children and caregivers feel comfortable in the Museum, initiating open ended play and resetting exhibits for endless fun. We wouldn't be able to offer such a safe and welcoming environment without them!

  • Baby Play - Every Tuesday from 10-11:30am babies and their caregivers create a special bond filled with moments of joy, learning, and discovery. Whether it's through playful interactions, soothing cuddles, or shared laughter, these times nurture trust and closeness, laying a foundation for the child's emotional and social development. This come and go program also leads caregivers to connect with other caregivers, forming valuable friendships. Sharing experiences, tips, and laughter over baby milestones or challenges strengthens this supportive community.
