Hospitals across the country are dealing with a shortage of bottles used for blood cultures, and it's a serious issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned providers of a "critical shortage." The American Hospital Association says the shortage is expected to last until the early fall. Hospitals are devising strategies to conserve supplies, including advising staff to be more judicious in ordering blood cultures.

It didn't take long for Providence to name its next CEO. Two months after Rod Hochman, M.D. announced his plans to retire, Providence has chosen Erik Wexler to succeed him as president and CEO. He'll take the post on Jan. 1. Wexler is Providence's chief operating officer and has played a key role in some of the system's big initiatives. After nearly a decade, Marschall S. Runge, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of Michigan Medicine, has announced his plans to step away. Dr. Runge plans to step down when his contract expires on June 30, 2025. He’s also been dean of the University of Michigan Medical School since January 2016.
