In a nation enriched by diversity, it's critical to ensure that our educational leadership reflects the richness of our Latino/a population & historical narratives. According to the Latino Policy & Politics Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2021, the U.S. Latino population accounted for 19% of the total population, a 6% increase since 2000. However, despite this demographic shift, an imbalance exists in educational outcomes. Of the over 13,000 school districts in the U.S., only ~3% of superintendents are Latino or Latina. In response to this disparity, Chicago Scholar is amplifying Latino/a scholarly community voices – recognizing the importance of addressing this challenge & reaffirming a commitment to empowering Latino/a education. My parents immigrated to America from Mexico with nothing, speaking only Spanish, in search for the American Dream and -- instead worked tirelessly to survive paycheck to paycheck in one of Chicago's most poverty stricken steel barrios. As the son of Mexican immigrants, born & raised bilingual in inner city & multi-cultural Chicago, I understand the importance of education & academic representation. Being raised in a multicultural community surrounded by friends and family of all backgrounds – Puerto Ricans, Blacks, Cubans and Mexicans to name a few, helped inspire me. And thanks to my family & lived experiences, my passion is to give back through scholarly research in critical sports, Chicago & Mexican American history & culture empowering Latino/a scholars – to help make a difference. As a second year doctoral fellow, I know firsthand how research can inform educators & communities to better understand cultural history, create identity & challenge existing social power. Ethnographic research has the power to inform how educators can better understand multilingual groups & their use of language beyond a mere communicative purpose. ☆☆☆☆ Making Mexican Chicago: From Postwar Settlement to the Age of Gentrification (Here’s my Chpt.1-Review) 📚 Distinguished Professor & Scholar — Dr. Mike Amezcua’s book examines how Mexicans skillfully crafted communities & endured in #Chicago amid segregation, oppression, displacement, immigration policy, & gentrification in the 20th century. 📝 Today we’ll briefly learn together from Chapter 1 of the book — which covers the history of Chicago's spatial landscape that has been home to numerous multiethnic & transnational communities (over centuries). Very seldom is the #Mexican experience part of this story in the Midwest, let alone the legacy of the third-largest city in the United States. The book centers #Raza within the historical narrative of the Windy City as community builders and placemakers. The "Mexicanization of Chicago" was formed through pitched political battles, civil rights protests, & calls for urban reform to fight against segregation, immigration policy, & urban displacement in the contested neighborhoods of the Near West Side, Pilsen, Back of the Yards, & La Villita. 📗Chapter 1, “Crafting Capital,” recreates the physical reality that many Mexican Chicagoans encountered. In the early 20th century, the city became a laboratory for Homer Hoyt’s racial & ethnic neighborhood property value ranking system. Hoyt’s system was a precursor to the New Deal’s security maps enlisted by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation & Federal Housing Administration during the Great Depression, a measure that became known as #redlining. In Chicago, Hoyt’s initial ranking system was the first to identify Mexicans as a residential racial class linked to property devaluation. ⚪️ As white residents moved to nearby suburbs, Mexicans faced the reality that they could not move outside segregated neighborhoods due to restrictive racial deed covenants. Mexicans were also concentrated in the inner city, where they could find housing—although segregated—near manufacturing & packinghouse jobs that paid well. ⚖️ As Chicago began deindustrializing in the mid-20th century, however, these employers moved to other parts of the country, leaving Mexican workers and communities without reliable means of employment. These actions resulted in their concentration in urban colonias with limited political representation, substandard housing, urban renewal schemes, gentrification policies, and the onslaught of the U.S. immigration regime. 🔎 Next time — we’ll cover chapter 2 together for a brief review. 💯 Gracias por su apoyo. Countless people have seen the enormous Virgen de Guadalupe street painting in Chicago’s LV neighborhood—a mural — that displays a young man kneeling in the foreground with his head bowed in prayer. Drivers and pedestrians can’t miss this art, and people from allover come to Chicago to see it. The praying man in the mural is the painter himself, Héctor González, shown in his late twenties at the time it went up. Almost two decades later, Chicago artist Héctor González returned to redo the well known mural of La Virgen de Guadalupe and tell the story behind it. Over the years, he has driven by to see the mural or has sat quietly across the street from it, and said he has been moved whenever people taped flowers to the brick wall or placed candles on the pavement.
