Let's keep our Commonwealth moving. Our President and Chief Executive Officer Chellie Cameron expressed grave concerns over the lack of funding for our partners at Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) in Pennsylvania's FY 2024-2025 budget. We are proud to say "PA gets it done" on matters of basic education funding, business attraction and expansion, and a more competitive business tax and permitting environment. Yet without an adequate mass transit funding solution, this week’s state budget decisions leave many of us wondering how we’re planning to get there, literally. Philadelphia leaders have taken steps to improve the city’s business climate, but more work needs to be done to help small businesses thrive. The good news is we already have a roadmap for future success, which includes reducing Philadelphia’s Business Income & Receipts Tax (BIRT), writes Jennifer Rodriguez, President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, in an opinion piece for the Inclusive Growth Coalition. The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia mourns the loss of Walt D’Alessio, a visionary leader and dedicated public servant. As Chair of the Chamber Board of Directors and the esteemed recipient of the 1997 William Penn Award, Walt’s impact on our region and its economy was profound and far-reaching. Walt’s career spanned decades, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping Philadelphia’s skyline and revitalizing its neighborhoods. From his days at the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority and the PIDC to his leadership in the private sector, Walt’s commitment to economic development and urban renewal was unwavering. His efforts were instrumental in the advancement of many major projects such as Society Hill, the Navy Yard Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and the campuses of Temple University, Drexel University, and the University of Pennsylvania. Walt D’Alessio’s contributions to Greater Philadelphia are immeasurable, and his absence will be deeply felt within our business community and beyond. As a colleague and leader, so many of our careers were shaped, and even created, by his efforts. As a Philadelphian, his work will no doubt leave a legacy that will benefit many future generations. We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
