If you’re new to interpreting remotely, our QA team has a few tips to pass on. They happen to be some of the finest interpreters, too! 1). Build your vocab Continually studying vocabulary and terminology is essential for remote interpreters, as you can’t predict what’s on the other end of a call. Additionally, ask the LSP you partner with for client-specific glossaries or materials to help you prepare. 2). Have your go-to sites ready One advantage of remote interpreting is the ability to access resources during sessions. Bookmark your favorite sites in advance to reduce stress, like MedlinePlus and Drugs.com. Consider using language-specific keyboard stickers for added efficiency. 3). Create a call management strategy In remote sessions, the lack of visual cues and potential sound quality issues can make it difficult to hear and distinguish words at times. To address this, have a call management strategy ready. It can be as simple as: - Informing the client of the issue - Suggesting solutions - Explaining your approach - Thanking them for their understanding. 4). Interpreting remotely requires a secure, quiet location and the right tech. For phone interpreting, you’ll need a landline, reliable headset, note-taking materials, and a computer with resources. For VRI, you’ll need a strong internet connection, professional setup, and functioning headset, webcam, and computer. Ensure household members limit bandwidth use during your sessions. Some good reminders for healthcare practitioners: 💲 Patients should never be charged for interpreting services. 🧒 Minors should never be asked to interpret or translate for anyone. ⚕ Staff members can interpret ONLY IF they’ve been officially assessed for their interpreting skills and language proficiency (and paid as such). ✏ Don’t forget to document language preference and use of an interpreter in the patient’s record. #languageaccess #healthcare #languageservices

Bill Graeper built CLI with a telephone or two and a vision. He wanted interpretation to be accessible to those who needed it to communicate. Nearly 30 years later, and here we are — one of the largest providers of remote interpreting services in the U.S. Kristin Quinlan (Bill’s daughter) continues to lead CLI with integrity, balancing tech advancements with the irreplaceable value of human interpreters.
