On June 19th, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers went to Galveston, TX to enforce the freeing of all remaining slaves. Texas became the first state to celebrate Juneteenth as a holiday with other states following suite until it became a federal holiday in 2021.
