CENSIS CEO Paul Winstanley is in Aberdeen today to deliver a keynote talk at the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA) conference attended by c200 researchers and academics across Scotland. This year's theme is adaptability and resilience, particularly around interdisciplinary challenges to address wider economic and societal problems - something that is a fundamental focus of the work we do here at CENSIS. Last night, Paul and #CENSIS consultant Sandy Jenkins took part in the #SICSA careers fair, talking to researchers about our work and their research in relation to our technology ecosystem, along with opportunities for growth. Continuing our productive and supportive relationships with universities and colleges will be an important part of CENSIS's next phase of growth and development. Why the old phone in the photo? It provides a little insight into some of the work CENSIS is doing to address a major societal challenge - helping to reframe the delivery of home telecare support over the next few years ... #SupportingResearch #Collaboration #TechnologyEcosystems #SICSAconference #Telecare

The EU helped accelerate the transition to a #CircularEconomy with its new 'Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation' #ESPR published at the end of June. This regulation paves the way for the introduction of the Digital Product Passport #DPP from 2027 - a digital record that will collect and share information about products to improve #sustainability, environmental impact, and #recycling. CENSIS is creating a network of stakeholders committed to helping UK companies integrate the #DPP into their operations. CENSIS Business Development Manager Natalia Lukaszewicz has written about this change, and how CENSIS might help. https://lnkd.in/eNYk-9pt

Long-time CENSIS project partner and strategic collaborator for environmental projects, Prof Marian Scott of the University of Glasgow, has been awarded the 2024 RSE Lord Kelvin Medal - https://lnkd.in/e2X2yX3G. The award recognises exceptional achievements in physical, engineering and informatic sciences by a senior career researcher. Prof Scott has received this award for her ground-breaking statistical research which has transformed the application of statistical methods across different disciplines, including environmental science, radiocarbon dating, veterinary science and quantitative archaeology. Her research work has made significant influence on policy and practice, as demonstrated in her public service appointments to the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, EU Scientific Committee on Health, Environment and Emerging Risk, and the NERC Science Committee.  CENSIS has worked with Marian on a number of projects including this one - https://lnkd.in/geEJAy7V - a multi-disciplinary project with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency to design and deploy a sensor system network to support sustainability in Scottish water resources.

Everyone at CENSIS would like to extend congratulations to Dr Manel Pelayo Garcia who has passed his viva (with no corrections) and been awarded his PhD. Manel was one of 10 PhD researchers CENSIS sponsored in our second phase of funding from the Scottish Funding Council between 2019 and 2024. Manel was also supported by novosound and has progressed to a career with the company after his doctorate. Congratulations Manel!

End of an amazing journey 🥲 I am very excited to share the news that I have successfully passed the VIVA with no corrections, marking the end of the project, the end of an era. I want to deeply thanks the people that have made it possible, Dr Carlos Garcia Nuñez , Dave Hughes, Des Gibson. Without your unconditional support, long hours discussions, revision of manuscripts, and so on, this brilliant outcome could have not been possible. Looking back I want to share some thoughts that might help (maybe not) someone starting or in the middle of a PhD. I think a PhD is definitely not for everyone, it requires lots of sacrifice, huge amounts of effort and a constant duel with yourself (difficulties added if you live abroad far from family and friends). There are always points where you sit down in front of your computer late in the day, or even weekends, and start questioning why on earth would you do this to yourself? Is it really that important for your career? You are on your late twenties and still have not had a “proper job”? Will it make an actual difference in the future? And so many more questions that bombard your head that drive you towards quitting… however, if you persevere and navigate through the storm I can ensure there is a beautiful paradise at the end. A PhD is not only doing research, it is not a title to brag (though you should call me Dr. now 🧐), it is not a 9 to 5 thing, it is a personal almost spiritual journey, it is a long way you walk whilst building up skills that are hugely valuable not only for your professional career but for life. You learn to persevere, to think out of the box, to control your emotions, to control your impulses, to hard work, to be creative, to communicate efficiently, to be independent, to manage your time and priorities, to make decisions, to lead your work, etc. And all this is something you can only realise at the end of the journey after the storm, for that reason I want you to keep pushing through, you can thank me later for all the memories you will have after the PhD and the amazing person you will become 😎 To end this post I just want to share a quote that helped me during dark times: “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” - Rocky Balboa

CENSIS is helping the Digital Health Validation Lab (DHVL) to develop a support network for digital health innovators. The network will be particularly focused on the regulatory environments of products, and aims to address areas of particular challenge within the digital health landscape. Businesses and innovators involved in - or thinking about becoming involved in - the development of digital healthcare products or services, are invited to take a #survey to help DHVL understand regulatory needs. 🌟 Take the #survey at https://lnkd.in/ghnrCaDW By building a network that develops regulatory science approaches that span the entire product development cycle, DHVL aims to help innovators deliver high-impact digital health products and services that can be scaled up to benefit the UK and worldwide healthcare systems. Along with CENSIS, other partners in the network include Canon Medical Research Europe Ltd., Filament STAC - Smart Things Accelerator Centre, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and InnoScot Health.   DHVL is enabled by the UKRI-funded Living Laboratory programme, established to drive the co-development of healthcare innovations and their adoption into clinical settings through generation of real world evidence.
