As we continue to bring awareness this #BIPOCMentalHealth Awareness Month to the challenges that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) face when it comes to mental health, we’re revisiting a recent WHEC Rochester in Focus episode that highlights the importance of connecting families of children with social, emotional, mental health, and developmental needs with Family Peer Advocates who have shared experiences and come from racially diverse backgrounds. Having BIPOC Family Peer Advocates that mirror the racial and ethnic composition of the families served results in better engagement and more equitable outcomes for youth. We are proud to work with our partners to increase the number of BIPOC Family Peer Advocates in behavioral health services. The first part of the episode focuses on findings from the groundbreaking report we completed with Common Ground Health which reveals the pandemic’s long-lasting effects on youth mental health. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood and are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse later in life. A recently published study by CCSI’s Dr. Elizabeth Meeker and her colleagues in the Journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, found that adolescents with ACEs and suicidality report higher levels of substance use to alleviate distress. These findings indicate the importance of preventing ACEs, as well as mitigating their effects, to help reduce alcohol and cannabis use. Assets that buffer the effects of ACEs are rooted in adult support, so protecting youth against ACEs is important for all adults, from family to teachers to community members – we need to take every opportunity to interact with youth in a positive, caring way. Lenora received commendations from Rochester Mayor MALIK EVANS, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, NYS Assemblymember Harry Bronson, NYS Senator Samra Brouk, Congressman Joseph Morelle, and the BIPOC Parent Mental Health Project, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Journey Award from the NYS Office of Mental Health.
