  • A court ruling could permit the construction of a new reservoir to help combat the low water levels in the Panama Canal. A drought that reduced the amount of freshwater needed to operate the locks of the canal has led officials to decrease the maximum number of ships traversing the waterway each day. Panama’s desire to build another reservoir to supply water to the canal has long been hindered by a 2006 regulation prohibiting the waterway from expanding past its traditional watershed. The recent ruling by Panama’s Supreme Court allows for reinterpretation of these boundaries, potentially enabling the canal’s expansion. However, this project cannot be initiated without authorities first consulting the 12,000 inhabitants of the new site around the Indio River basin. The assistant canal administrator, Ilya Espino, believes that these talks to gain acceptance from local communities could take a year and a half, in addition to the three to four years of construction. This issue will be important since the Panama Canal serves as a significant route in global trade and the cutback in canal traffic has already disrupted global shipping at a time when other major waterways are having trouble. #PanamaCanal #PanamaSupremeCourt

  • Our 12th edition of our newsletter, #ELCC, is out. This time, as part of the Center for Latin America Convergence 's mission, we explore what we refer to as the hidden gems of the #Americas. #Paraguay is one such gem that has seen remarkable growth in its economy in recent years, establishing itself as one of the fastest-growing economies in #LatinAmerica. CClatam had the pleasure of hosting President Santiago Peña Peña at several events, where we were captivated by his vision for the country. His focus on promoting inclusive and sustainable development, ensuring that all Paraguayans can benefit from the nation's progress, truly impressed us. What left a lasting impression on us is President #Peña's unwavering dedication to the prosperity and welfare of his country. This profound sense of commitment shines through in his countenance and the depth of his gaze whenever he speaks about the future of Paraguay. We were fortunate to have an exclusive interview with President Peña, which our readers can read: https://lnkd.in/gumFVZmH We wish him success in overcoming the numerous challenges that lie ahead. • Top officials of Argentine President Javier Milei’s government have taken steps to ensure market stability by reassuring private bank executives about market liquidity measures. According to Bloomberg News, Economy Minister Luis Caputo and central bank head Santiago Bausili met with the bankers to discuss a new framework introduced last Friday. Key highlights: - The government will buy new treasury notes if necessary to maintain market liquidity. - A major component of the plan involves swapping central bank notes for newly issued treasury notes to tackle Argentina’s triple-digit inflation rate, currently around 276%. - The crawling peg of 2% per month and a different exchange rate for exporters will remain in place. - Over 80 bank executives attended the meeting, underscoring the importance of these measures for financial stability. These actions demonstrate the government's commitment to addressing economic challenges and stabilizing the market. Will this be enough? #Argentina #Economy #Finance #Inflation #MarketLiquidity #Banking #EconomicPolicy #FinancialStability

  • #Mexico and #Chile have successfully concluded negotiations to modernize their Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking the 25th anniversary of the original deal. The updated agreement includes groundbreaking chapters on gender and trade, as well as support for micro-, small-, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs). Mexico’s Economy Minister, Raquel Buenrostro, highlighted that this modernized FTA aims for a more inclusive policy, enhancing the role of women and MSMEs in the economy. Chile’s Undersecretary of International Economic Relations, Claudia Sanhueza, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the shared goal of democratizing trade to benefit a broader range of participants. In 2023, trade between Mexico and Chile reached $3.4 billion, growing at an average annual rate of 3.8% since 1998. This modernized agreement promises even greater opportunities for both countries. #Trade #EconomicGrowth #Inclusion #MSMEs #GenderEquality
