Our mission is to transform the standard approach to saving shelter cats, and reduce euthanasia nationwide.

About us

Cat Town's mission is to transform the approach to saving shelter cats, reducing euthanasia nationwide. Our focus is to find great homes for cats who are considered unadoptable in the traditional rescue model. Cat Town focuses on the elderly, frightened, stressed, and sick or injured cats who would otherwise be killed, because there were no rescue organizations focused on them at our overcrowded city shelter. Cat Town’s approach proves these cats are highly adoptable, and since 2011, has helped reduce the euthanasia rate for cats at Oakland Animal Services, Oakland’s municipal shelter, by more than 70%. Cat Town is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and all donations are tax-deductible. Our tax ID is 27-3838132.

Thank you to The Mercury News for this piece on our work as the nation's first cat cafe! Time flies when you're having fun, and we can't believe that this year will mark 10 years since we opened our adoption center to support more at-risk shelter cats! Doing so has helped so many of our cats gain visibility, build resiliency, and find love. We're honored to do this work every day, and grateful that we can offer shelter cats a less stressful place to stay while they get ready to be adopted.

Cat Town Chronicles: Where Love Meets Latte! Join us this Saturday, February 17 at 8:30 AM on Cox Cable national network for Season 11, Episode 3 and AnimalZone's enchanting journey into the feline haven of Cat Town in Oakland, California. Also available now on Vimeo at: https://lnkd.in/d3VDHz2W Established in 2011, Cat Town stands as a refuge for cats whose age, health, and behaviors pose challenges for adoption in conventional shelters. Executive Director Andrew Dorman unveils the captivating history of Cat Town, the pioneering birthplace of the first Cat Cafe in the US in 2014. Hosting up to 10,000 visitors annually, the cafe has become a cherished spot where patrons can indulge in coffee before venturing next door to Cat Town, meeting feline friends eagerly awaiting their forever homes. Because nothing says "I love you, cat" quite like sipping a latte in the company of playful felines. It's the hottest spot in town for both caffeine enthusiasts and aspiring cat whisperers. Cat Town's distinctive approach is dedicated to reducing the euthanasia rate at Oakland Animal Services, achieving a remarkable drop of over 70% since its inception. With over 400 cat adoptions each year, the organization prioritizes matchmaking to ensure every cat finds their perfect family. Quinn Wright, Development Director, shares the secrets of creating the purr-fect home – a bit like eHarmony, but with more fur and fewer awkward dinner dates! Dilara Goksel Parry, Certified Cat Behaviorist and Program Director, sheds light on the importance of crafting suitable environments for cats. Cats should always have a designated space in the home where they can escape and decompress away from people. Boxes, cat trees, or other elevated areas are especially beneficial. In homes with children, having a perch out of reach can be an ideal escape for cats. The episode immerses viewers in the dynamic and artistic atmosphere of Cat Town, showcasing creations by local Oakland artists. It explores the cage-free environment, providing cats with various nooks and crannies for escape and relaxation. Gain insights into cat behavior from Dilara Goksel Parry. Cat Town ensures that every paw finds its way into the hearts of loving families, creating a love story that begins with a meow and unfolds into a lifetime of cuddles. Brace yourself to be charmed by the paw prints that leave lasting imprints on the hearts of those who open their homes to these fabulous feline companions. Working at Cat Town means that before long, you'll witness a transformative breakthrough that perfectly encapsulates why we focus on helping shelter cats who struggle in a shelter cage. As we reflect on all you helped us accomplish last year, we can't help but reflect on our favorite moments, and share one more of our team’s favorite adoptions with you. This is Adeline’s story of Crouton. Your support helped us surpass our all-time adoption record, with a whopping 463 adoptions in 2023, and ensured we could stay focused on supporting cats like Crouton, who needed us most. We can't wait to see what we accomplish together this year! https://lnkd.in/gsQN8Mpn
