Catapult Greater Pittsburgh engages in emergency resource distribution, peer-to-peer support, wealth building, trauma-informed financial counseling and policy advocacy to ensure systematically disenfranchised communities can meaningfully achieve economic justice and lead dignified and equitable lives. Catapult Greater Pittsburgh 5 areas of concentration: Catapult Peer to Peer Connection: A robust curriculum helping individuals recognize and heal from the trauma of long-term exposure to poverty, create plans for future financial security, expand social capital and develop lasting relationships for support and to realize long term stability. Catapult Asset Building: Supporting wealth building through paths to home ownership and entrepreneurialism. Building generational wealth is an important element in sustainable economic justice. Catapult Door (Developing Ownership Opportunities for Residents): Provides a comprehensive plan to make the dream of first-time home ownership a reality. DOOR addresses the specific needs and challenges prospective buyers may encounter, while providing supporting every step of the way. Catapult encourages home ownership as a means to empower individuals towards growing family assets. Catapult KEY (Keeping Equity Yours): Equips homeowners to maintain their property and build upon their financial fortitude. Homeowners attend seminars on achieving good credit, appropriate budgeting and saving programs. They will learn basic maintenance, how to avoid predatory lending and how to do estate planning. KEY strives to provide homeowners with tangible skills and tools to maintain and sustain responsible homeownership. Catapult Trauma Informed Financial Literacy: Is a strong foundation of personal financial knowledge and planning with workshops, one-on-one guidance and materials to keep our community members financially informed and empowered. We address generational poverty through a trauma informed approach unique to the Catapult model.

Leading an organization that helps families escape poverty has been the highlight of my career. As a woman who once felt trapped in poverty, I know firsthand the hopelessness that comes with it. That's why I'm proud to lead a team that builds and implements programs to give people hope and power, translating to the hard work and commitment necessary to escape poverty. At Catapult Greater Pittsburgh, we understand that ownership of assets is the key to gaining economic stability and power. We also know that healing from generational poverty trauma is the first step on the journey out of poverty. That's why we prioritize helping families acknowledge and heal from trauma they may not even understand. I am grateful to use my own experiences to help develop and implement programs, alongside my incredible team, that are changing lives and providing hope for a more economically stable life. Today I had the pleasure of presenting at the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission Housing Equality Conference. The keynote speakers were the author/authors of The Color of Law and Justice Action by Richard and Leah Rothstein. Mayor Gainey was in attendance and spoke to his commitment to increasing affordable housing options in the city. Sharing the stage with like-minded colleague, Charlise Smith we discussed specific actions needed to improve the housing options for Black families in Pittsburgh. “Any reassessment must be revenue neutral and not a backdoor tax hike for the people of Allegheny County and should protect seniors and low-income homeowners in the process," Gardner added. "Ideally reassessments would be state-mandated, mundane, regular occurrences and not once per decade shocks to the system." We should all be paying attention to this. Allegheny County has always had inconsistent property tax reassessments. Every time a reassessment has come up it causes unnecessary stress and unnecessary resources to figure it out. I agree that there should be a more consistent reassessment process. My biggest concern is in making sure there are strong protections in place for low-income, senior and middle income homeowners. Without the proper protections, people will be forced out of their homes because of tax increase forced foreclosures, Some homeowners would see monthly tax increases that are larger than their current mortgages. Inflation is already pushing people to their limits, large increases in taxes could be catastrophic. Attended an Heirs Property convening at Fannie Mae this week and felt energized being in a room full of people focused on this extremely important issue. Heirs property, also known as Tangled Title, is stealing billions of dollars in generational wealth across the country, contributing to blight and vacancy in our communities, and disproportionately impacting Black communities here and across the country. At Catapult Greater Pittsburgh, we're committed to increasing homeownership opportunities for Black families in Allegheny County and beyond. We provide education, legal and financial resources, and support through the home buying journey. Our C.L.E.A.R program (Clinic for Legal Equity And Repairs) offers free legal resources to clear the title and get their name on the deed as well as access to health and safety repairs needed to make the home safe and habitable, if needed. We're dedicated to providing trauma-informed financial education, first-time homebuyer education, including estate planning education, as well as post-purchase education and counseling.
