Casa Dorinda honored Scholarship award recipients at its Annual Awards Ceremony. In partnership with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, @sbscholarship, nearly 800 scholarships and $1.9 million have been awarded over the years through this program. This year broke records with more than 30 awardees and $185,000 in scholarship awards. The generosity of Casa Dorinda residents was recognized, and the Casa Dorinda Scholarship Committee was praised for its leadership and commitment to growing the number of awardees from previous years. Casa Dorinda was proud to partner with The Music Academy of the West @musicacademyw to bring an exclusive musical event to our Casa Dorinda residents. The Music Academy of the West featured the Percussion Studio with teaching artist, Michael Werner, for a unique curated performance that included percussive sounds created by unusual instruments that had been fashioned from everyday items and materials such as a large wooden box drum, sandpaper, chopsticks (that were used to play a guitar) and even hotel desk bells! Casa Dorinda welcomed Dana Newquist, President of the Santa Barbara Antique Automobile Club of America Region @antiqueautomobileclubofamerica to help us celebrate Father's Day. We had over 30 vintage cars on display and residents were able to vote for their favorite automobile in various categories. Prizes for the 4 winning cars were awarded to the club members and best-dressed female and male, by popular vote. The Santa Barbara Young Professionals Club @sbypc volunteered to help make this a successful event. Our residents enjoyed a decadent brunch with friends and family. May was Bird Month at Casa Dorinda! We visited the Bird Refuge, had resident presentations about bird migration and navigation, a wildlife-education program with live birds of prey as well as a nature trail walk with companion parrots from the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary @sbbirdsanctuary. The Santa Barbara Young Professionals Club @sbypc volunteered in the morning with the residents and assisted with the NatureTracks on the trail. The Casa Dorinda Visual Arts Committee hosted an exhibition of original works of art by resident, Michelle Joanou and her late husband, Phil Joanou. Michelle Joanou displayed original crafted quilt designs of bright colors and striking abstract details. She also displayed collage works that make use of wooden doors as the canvas to create extraordinary art. Phil Joanou’s paintings were inspired by his youthful interest in cartoons, but these themes had evolved into a unique fine art form in various media. The UC Santa Barbara Department of Music and Chamber Choir performed an impressive Opera Gala at Casa Dorinda to honor our resident, Dr. Yoel Haller. Director Isabel Bayrakdarian, Conductor Brent Wilson, Choreographer Christina McCarthy and Pianist Dr. John Ballerino orchestrated a program that included dancing and vocal performances to the accompaniment of music composed by Joseph Bologne, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George Frideric Handel and Christoph Willibald Gluck. This made for a memorable evening event. Casa Dorinda celebrated the graduation of its second class of ten CNA candidates at the end of April. Students had completed 60 hours of online training and 100 hours of clinical training. The CNA training program is a collaboration between Leading Age California’s Gateway-In Project, LA Skills Academy and Casa Dorinda. In addition, Casa’s Clinic nurse Claudia Pedrote, LVN served as the clinical instructor. All graduates will be welcome as new members of the Casa Dorinda health services team.
