Attention to all seasoned job seekers, here's a post by a man who has had some considerable work experience, and how he updated his LinkedIn profile to make it more palatable for recruiters to appreciate him. #fightageism
The real estate marketing guy. I turn real estate agent websites into lead-gen machines with SEO and content.
A year ago at this time, I shut down my job search. I'd been job hunting about four months and was beyond frustrated. When I started looking in Feb. 2023, I quickly found a really good fit—an editing role with a well-known company in the search marketing industry. The work and job title were below my Editor-in-Chief role with Search Engine Land, but it was a company I respected, work I enjoyed, and I had no issues with the salary/benefits. Did a series of interviews with this company. I thought each one went well. Did an editing test with the guy who would've been my manager. It took a good 12-15 hours to complete. The 4-5 people with whom I interviewed all seemed 15-20 years younger than me, which is fine because I still think of myself as being about 35-40 years old. 😅 Didn't get it. "Decided to go in another direction" or something. I applied for dozens more roles, most of which I was more than capable and qualified to do well. Couldn't even get interviews. Then I found "ageism LinkedIn" and discovered I wasn’t alone. I found coaches and consultants who specialize in helping 50+-year-olds navigate the job market. After reading their posts and asking some questions, here's what I changed on my resumé: 1. Removed my 2020 headshot 2. Removed the date I graduated college 3. Removed all jobs prior to 2006 4. Removed all words/phrases that suggest age, like "veteran," "long track record of success," etc. Here's what I did elsewhere: 1. On all social media, replaced my 2020 headshot with one from 2013 2. Did the same photo switch on my personal website, which a recruiter could discover by following my email domain 3. Removed all jobs prior to 2006 from my LinkedIn profile What happened? Within three weeks, • I landed interviews with three companies. • Two executive headhunters reached out to tell me their clients were interested in me. • A third person contacted me with a business opportunity. (I wasn’t interested.) None of those were a great fit, and I ended up going all in with my own business. But what a lesson about ageism! We all know it exists in the workplace. I had no idea it was so prevalent in the job search, too. Sharing this because I have friends and acquaintances who are about the same age, and I see them struggling to find work despite incredible skills and backgrounds. (You know who you are. I'm rooting for you.) I'm also sharing this in the hopes that everyone in HR who sees this will step back and consider why your company won't hire people over 50 or whatever age you've decided is "too old." If this is relatable in any way, let me suggest you follow Colleen Paulson on here -- I've never met her, but the posts from her and people in her network were a huge help. And BTW, I'm happily employed right now at Narrative Bent working with several former (younger!) teammates from my HomeLight days and I'm glad they appreciate the experience I bring to the table.
