We're a passionate, mission-driven health center working towards health justice for LGBTQ+ communities.
About us
Callen-Lorde is the global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare. Since the days of Stonewall, we have been transforming lives in LGBTQ+ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. In addition, we are continuously pioneering research, advocacy and education to drive positive change around the world, because we believe healthcare is a human right. Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back over 50 years to the St. Marks Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project – two volunteer-based clinics that provided safe and confidential sexual health and primary care regardless of ability to pay. These clinics merged in 1983 to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed, episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.

Callen-Lorde recently partnered with Bernie Wagenblast, the MTA, the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, and Area 23 on the InTransit Campaign. We were honored to be part of this creative and engaging campaign that uplifts the experiences of trans New Yorkers for International Transgender Day of Visibility. The campaign was recently awarded two Gold Lions at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. As our CEO Patrick McGovern said at the time of the campaign’s launch: “The resilience of the trans community has paved the way for LGBTQ+ rights across the country, and their stories deserve to be amplified and celebrated. At a time when LGBTQ+ healthcare is under attack, Callen-Lorde is proud to serve as a safe haven for queer and trans people who need knowledgeable and welcoming healthcare–as we have for more than 55 years.” Watch this video and visit the website to learn more: https://www.intransit.nyc/

We’re proud to share that Marcus Sandling, M.D., Callen-Lorde's clinical director of sexual health, was named to the 2024 Notable LGBTQIA+ Leaders list by Crain's New York Business. Dr. Sandling leads Callen-Lorde's sex-positive and supportive approach to sexual health. With his leadership in 2023, Callen-Lorde prescribed 15% of PrEP prescriptions statewide, playing a powerful role in curbing the transmission of HIV in New York. He is clinical co-director of Callen-Lorde's long-acting injectable PrEP program and has played leading roles in Callen-Lorde's expansion into Brooklyn and responding to the mpox outbreak. Crain's editors select nominated honorees based on their accomplishments, track record of success and contributions to their industry and community. Congratulations, Dr. Sandling!

We celebrate the news that cuts to HIV services will be reversed in the city's new budget! This is great news for Callen-Lorde’s Undetectables program, which provides additional assistance to HIV patients who are struggling to manage their health. https://lnkd.in/efKGjXXz

“We are grateful and relieved that our champions in the New York City Council and Mayor Adams have come to a budget agreement that includes the restoration of $5.4M for HIV services,” said Callen-Lorde CEO Patrick McGovern. “These funds help the Callen-Lorde patients who are living with HIV keep their viral loads undetectable, providing a pathway to healthier lives and preventing the spread of HIV. The cuts would have caused irreparable harm and further threatened our progress to end HIV in New York City. With these funds restored, we can continue our work engaging our community and our patients with affirming support and healthcare.” https://lnkd.in/eZtfQquG

The Undetectables program is just one of Callen-Lorde’s initiatives available to patients with HIV, and it represents a lifeline for people who otherwise might not be able to maintain their health care. It must be saved. https://lnkd.in/etHyJ4yZ
