We're a passionate, mission-driven health center working towards health justice for LGBTQ+ communities.
About us
Callen-Lorde is the global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare. Since the days of Stonewall, we have been transforming lives in LGBTQ+ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. In addition, we are continuously pioneering research, advocacy and education to drive positive change around the world, because we believe healthcare is a human right. Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back over 50 years to the St. Marks Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project – two volunteer-based clinics that provided safe and confidential sexual health and primary care regardless of ability to pay. These clinics merged in 1983 to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed, episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.

We celebrate the news that cuts to HIV services will be reversed in the city's new budget! This is great news for Callen-Lorde’s Undetectables program, which provides additional assistance to HIV patients who are struggling to manage their health. https://lnkd.in/efKGjXXz

“We are grateful and relieved that our champions in the New York City Council and Mayor Adams have come to a budget agreement that includes the restoration of $5.4M for HIV services,” said Callen-Lorde CEO Patrick McGovern. “These funds help the Callen-Lorde patients who are living with HIV keep their viral loads undetectable, providing a pathway to healthier lives and preventing the spread of HIV. The cuts would have caused irreparable harm and further threatened our progress to end HIV in New York City. With these funds restored, we can continue our work engaging our community and our patients with affirming support and healthcare.” https://lnkd.in/eZtfQquG

The Undetectables program is just one of Callen-Lorde’s initiatives available to patients with HIV, and it represents a lifeline for people who otherwise might not be able to maintain their health care. It must be saved. https://lnkd.in/etHyJ4yZ

Adam Odsess-Rubin (he/him) is the Founder and Artistic Director of National Queer Theater. He found his way to Callen-Lorde after a disheartening encounter with a doctor who lacked awareness of PrEP and the health needs of the LGBTQ+ community. For Adam, Callen-Lorde was more than a healthcare provider; it was finding a sense of belonging and community. “I love seeing the Keith Harding art on the walls. It makes me feel at home and affirmed. It’s like going to a gay bar, but instead, I’m getting my prescription. It’s a good vibe.” Adam embodies the spirit of pride, championing LGBTQ+ rights and creating spaces where queer individuals can thrive.
