Tackling the Climate Data Challenges toward More Sustainable Finance A new CFA Institute report highlights the significant obstacles in obtaining reliable climate-related data for investment analysis. Nearly half of the members surveyed cited poor corporate disclosures as a major barrier. Why This Matters: Investors need accurate, comprehensive climate data to assess risks and opportunities effectively. Without reliable data, making informed decisions to support the transition to a low-carbon economy is challenging. This impacts investment returns and global efforts to mitigate climate change. Key Data Challenges: Company-Level Issues: Limited resources for quality emissions data. Third-Party Providers: Inconsistent calculations and methodologies. ESG Ratings: Often fail to capture decarbonization efforts. Scope 3 (Financed) Emissions: Most emissions for many industries require complex estimations. While it is the most significant part of financial firms' carbon footprint, it is difficult to measure. Regulatory Efforts: While regulations such as the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS 9 ) aim to standardize disclosures, comparability issues may persist due to varying definitions and requirements.
