About us
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Organization Affairs (IO) develops and implements U.S. policy at the United Nations and in a wide range of other multilateral organizations. With seven diplomatic missions (Geneva, Montreal, Nairobi, New York, Paris, Rome, and Vienna), our mission is to employ multilateral diplomacy as a tool for advancing U.S. interests through a more effective and efficient UN and multilateral system. We work to advance America’s national interests, protect the American people, promote American prosperity and values, and drive necessary reforms. IO has been pivotal in shaping U.S. policies that significantly impact the global stage since the UN’s founding in 1949. IO’s greatest asset is its people—highly skilled diplomats and policy experts who tackle some of the most pressing international issues. Follow our page for updates and opportunities. We obviously haven’t been on LinkedIn for 235 years, but that’s how long the Department of State has been around. The Department was established 235 years ago today, on July 27, 1789, to advise the President and lead our foreign policy. The first Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, oversaw a staff of one chief clerk, three other clerks, a translator, and a messenger. They maintained two diplomatic posts, in London and Paris, and 10 consular posts. 235 years later, the Department’s workforce includes some 13,000 members of the Foreign Service, 11,000 Civil Service employees, and 45,000 locally employed staff at more than 270 diplomatic missions worldwide. 📌#USUNESCOLatestNews: Celebrating the one year anniversary of the United States rejoining UNESCO. 🎉 Our Mission is thrilled to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the U.S. re-joining the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)! On July 25, 2023, First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden and UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay raised the flag of the United States at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. What an action packed first year with the U.S. elected as a member of the Executive Board and as co-chair with Ghana of the Group of Friends of Priority Africa. Every day we are working with countries around the world prioritizing education, particularly STEM education for women and girls among other key efforts underway at UNESCO in the education, science, media freedom, and cultural sectors. With additional U.S. funds we have specific projects in Holocaust education, protecting Ukrainian cultural heritage, increasing U.S. expertise in ethics of artificial intelligence and neurotechnology, and so much more! To all of our partners at the UNESCO Secretariat, Permanent Member States, and around the world; in our 9 Creative Cities, 22 University Chairs, Goodwill Ambassadors, collaborators with 25 World Heritage Sites in the U.S., National Park Service, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and all those who believe that it’s so important to have the U.S. back in a leadership role in UNESCO: 🙏 Thank you! 🙏 Team USUNESCO is grateful to count on you as part of our community and looks forward to our continued partnership in the year ahead. 💡Please join us in celebrating this milestone by sharing a video message or tweet with us on social media by tagging @USUNESCO on X or on our LinkedIn page U.S. Mission to UNESCO. The U.S. UNESCO team looks forward to amplifying your stories, memories, photos, and videos from this past year on our accounts. From our entire team - thank you again, and cheers to great things in the year ahead!
