Build Reuse empowers communities to turn their construction and demolition waste into local resources.

About us

Build Reuse is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 1994 that serves as the premier national organization encouraging the recovery, reuse, and recycling of building materials in the United States. We are also committed to developing social investment and workforce development programs in the deconstruction industry. Build Reuse is the host and organizer of the annual Deconstruction and Reuse Conference, the only conference in North America that focuses on how communities can create, develop, and support reuse economies. Our vision is to transform our communities by creating a building industry in which used and excess materials become an asset and waste is no longer acceptable. Construction and demolition waste is the largest single-stream source of refuse in the United States. We believe that the present linear economic model that relies on the consumption of new products and materials is unsustainable. We know that the practice of reuse inherently recognizes and prioritizes existing community value. Reinvesting the wealth embodied in existing materials back into the communities from which they originated has enormous economic, environmental, cultural, and social potential. We’re imagining a world without waste - and with the support of our members, we’re taking collective strides to make this vision a reality. Become a member today! www.buildreuse.org

#CulturalHeritage x #CircularEconomy inspired learning and building. Quite some time ago, we got 3 Kuka robots for the SirkTRE project, which got installed in NTNU in Gjøvik (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), and yes, we admit that these 'nonhuman employees' have not been activated that much yet for our mission to accelerate circularity. Not yet. First, we had to #learn some things, perhaps #unlearn some other things too. This week, we had a sprint with a 87 year-old wise master in old building techniques, and international guests from the Netherlands and Denmark. We had two tracks: a manual and a robotic. The first track is all about learning and getting inspiration from CE principles that we can find back in old Norwegian building techniques. Some employees in Omtre and our international guests got supervised by Norway's Old Building Technique Master who has a lot of experience-based knowledge. The second track was about exploring (why,) how and what can be automated to produce more in a shorter labor time. In the second track, our fabricators got supported by Step Solutions AS. Some weeks ago, a key employee in Omtre also got initiated by DataForm Lab into the software and robot setup. DataForm Lab is another important partner in this whole learning journey. In both tracks, #reclaimedtimber was used, harvested by Omtre from 100 year-old abandoned barns. The Old Master approved the use of this reclaimed timber and gave some new insights how to get the best of each single timber member. In the past days, there were interactions between the two learning tracks, and this morning, it became clear how the manual track influenced the robotic track... The tangible outcomes of the #HuldraDemo are perhaps not the most impressive demonstration of what we can do in Omtre, but we are proud in Omtre on what we all #learned in the past days. And we will keep learning in the next months and years. And so it begins...

Senior Circular Economy + Deconstruction Manager ♻️ Embodied Carbon + Public Policy

Deconstruction a demolition alternative, not a preservation alternative. 💥 Heritage conservation and the reuse of whole buildings can be considered the pinnacle of waste prevention in the building sector. Although heritage conservationists typically aim to preserve whole buildings in place, there are many cases when the demolition of historic structures is unavoidable. At the same time, stewards of old buildings often seek reclaimed material to make in-kind, long-lasting repairs. In these cases, deconstruction can be used to preserve historic material, understand and document construction techniques, and provide a measure of closure for communities. Given the magnitude of waste generated by demolition, increasing resource depletion, and volatile supply chains that contribute to inequities in material access and affordability, the time for a shift to circular construction and a reuse-first approach is now - and I totally believe that heritage conservation practitioners and advocates can lead the way. Let me know if you agree! 🌎🏠♻️ Images: (1) Shadow play in the late afternoon on a deconstruction site, with ghost marks left by a brick chimney, which was removed brick-by-brick. (2) A pallet of brick ready for its next life in a new project. D'Hanis Brick and Tile Company was founded in 1905 about 50 miles west of San Antonio and is still operating today. The house that was deconstructed was built in 1918. 🤓 Training led by Re:Purpose Savannah and organized by City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation. #historicpreservation #heritageconservation #deconstruction #circulareconomy #reuse #reusereducerecycle #circularconstruction #circularheritage
