BSNM CEO and Chair of the Midtown Cultural Arts District Desmond Bertrand-Pitts, MBA, M.Ed. recently interviewed James E. Walker, the artist who wrapped the iconic Midtown Houston sign at Bagby Park with his design for the Juneteenth holiday. The artwork captures the 2024 Juneteenth Houston theme "Road to Juneteenth'' and consists of a vibrant and compelling visual narrative. It represents key moments leading up to the creation of the Juneteenth holiday, such as the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and the announcement of the end of slavery in Galveston. Research suggests that Black and Hispanic #veterans may suffer from higher rates of PTSD than their white counterparts. Possible reasons for the disparity include higher rates of trauma, institutional practices that impact recovery, and lack of treatment. Limited access to quality mental health care, societal stigmas, and racial discrimination can also play a factor. Today is #PTSDAwareness Day. If you suffer from #PTSD, please know that you are not alone. African American women have been breaking barriers in the military ever since Cathay Williams enlisted as a Buffalo Soldier in 1866. Since then many other trailblazers have followed in her footsteps. ⭐️ Command Sgt. Maj. Mildred C. Kelly made history in 1972 by becoming the first Black female sergeant major in the US Army. ⭐️ Staff Sgt. Joyce B. Malone became the first and oldest Black woman to earn Airborne wings in the US Army Reserves in 1974. These women paved the way for future generations of African American women. We salute them and all women who have bravely served our country on #WomenVeteransDay. 🇺🇸 #military #veterans
