From the Editor’s Desk: Your Herald is here — a day early. With the Fourth of July holiday we're coming to you in advance of all the pomp and circumstance. It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to talk about the fine journalists who write the stories, take the photographs and design the pages you see week in and week out in the Bucks County Herald newspaper. They are true professionals and they do this work, not for awards, but because they know it matters to the readers and communities they serve. But once in a while, these folks bring home the hardware and I get an excuse to publicly recognize them and thank them for all they do. The Bucks County Herald in June took 14 Keystone Media Awards in the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association’s annual journalism contest, which recognizes the best work in various categories during the prior year. In this week's edition of the Herald, we feature those talented team members. Many Bucks County residents visit Lake Galena every morning, whether it be for a jog, a dog walk, a bike ride or a day out with the family. Adding to the beauty of the park in New Britain Township is the joy that Joel Occhiuzzo spreads on a daily basis. Occhiuzzo, 92, has lived many lives — drummer, entrepreneur, Korean War veteran — and has many stories to tell. Lately, he has become a staple at Peace Valley. He looks forward to the connections he makes with both people and their dogs. If you haven't had the pleasure already, visit buckscountyherald.com to meet Joel and learn about the joy he brings to the trails of Peace Valley Park. Your Herald is here: A Doylestown pastor’s decision to end his church’s longstanding relationship with a theater group over language in a play shocked the actors. After seeing a March performance by the State Street Players at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, the Rev. Matthew Guckin said he “objected” to several lines in the musical theater group’s skits. Writer Freda R. Savana spoke with the pastor about why he decided to “disaffiliate” the church’s 44-year association with State Street Players earlier this month. Visit buckscountyherald.com for that and more. This week for her column "It's a Living," Lisa DeAngelis writes, if you solicit advice online about working for Uncle Sam, you will repeatedly see positive comments about “pensions, sick pay, stability, and guaranteed pay raises,” and a few negative ones like “boring, or slow-moving bureaucracy.” She wanted to talk to a government employee and so she chose Donna Wright, environmental protection specialist II — a health inspector in layman’s terms: https://lnkd.in/eGxUpigs. "It's a Living" is a weekly column showcasing residents who are making a living in an interesting way, or people who’ve reinvented their careers because they could no longer ignore the voice in the back of their heads telling them to start over, take a risk, chase a dream or set out on their own. #itsaliving #itsalivingwithlisa #itsalivingwithlisadeangelis #career #buckscounty #buckscountynews #communitynews #readtheherald #buckscountyherald #buckscountypa #sharethegoodnews #happytobehere

Five Bucks County Republican state legislators gathered on May 30 at the scene of a violent crime solved using DNA technology to say DNA samples ought to be taken like fingerprints — that is, at the time of an arrest. The ACLU is against the legislation they’ve co-sponsored to make it happen in Pennsylvania, calling it “suspicionless DNA collection.” The two bills — Senate Bill 988 along with its companion House Bill 2030 — would expand the number of DNA samples taken by requiring post-arrest testing of anyone charged with a felony or certain misdemeanors — rather than only after convicted, as it is now. Officer Christopher Shaffer says he always wanted to be a police officer. He grew up hearing the stories both his maternal and paternal grandfathers told. One grandfather worked for the Philadelphia Police Department. The other was a motorcycle officer in Mount Vernon, N.Y. Chris remembers growing up in Philadelphia playing sports for the Police Athletic League and seeing how police officers dedicated their time to teaching and coaching teams. And now it is his turn. His story as told by columnist Lisa DeAngelis in "It's a Living:" 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e2fbnMTz.
