The Institute for Vaccine Safety Director, Dr. Daniel Salmon, and co-authors discuss funding for vaccine safety science in a commentary, “Establishing Ongoing Funding for Post-Authorization Vaccine Safety Science,” recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The United States benefits from a robust federal immunization program, which has been successful in controlling and eliminating many diseases. However, widespread vaccine hesitancy observed during the COVID-19 pandemic shows that the public is no longer satisfied with the traditional post-authorization vaccine safety goal of detecting and quantifying vaccine risks and that, when possible, the public also wants us to mitigate and prevent rare but serious adverse reactions, which no longer seem rare when vaccines are given to millions/billions of people.
