Mandatory reporting on social and environmental issues is here to stay – and intelligent reporting strategies should be on every CEO’s agenda. BCG serves clients grappling with the challenges of sustainability reporting amid evolving disclosure regulations and standards, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Some companies take a ‘firefighting’ approach that affords limited opportunity for value creation. The strategic partnership between BCG and Workiva – the world's leading platform for assured integrated reporting – helps our clients adapt to evolving regulations while enabling a long-term view that drives enhanced ESG performance and competitive advantage. Tim Mohin, Partner & Director in Climate & Sustainability at BCG, and Abhay Krishna, Director of Value Management at Workiva, outline three critical points companies should consider in their sustainability reporting. Cooperation is Required: Finance, sustainability, legal and other departments need to collaborate as ESG topics are integrated into the financial reporting processes. New Tools: Automation is necessary for companies to efficiently create timely and reliable sustainability disclosures. Data Management: Data quality controls are essential for external assurance and require a centralized process. Preparing for this exercise requires a business transformation. The processes, capabilities, tools, and governance all must be evaluated and improved to meet the new requirements. Going forward, sustainability reporting must meet the same rigor as financial reporting.

According to Jacopo Piccolo Brunelli, “Tackling cost more holistically through fundamental business practices—better governance, a certain level of technology and investment, and driving productivity—leads to greater change, deeper change, and more sustainable change if you can get it right.” The true challenge in cost transformation within the European market lies not merely in achieving initial savings but in ensuring these benefits endure over time.
