Have you made any of these common resume mistakes? Don't worry, we have too! However, with the fantastic resources available to you, like Hire Heroes USA, Boots to Books, and many more you can write a great resume! It just takes some elbow grease. If you are looking for tips from an experienced recruiter, check back next week when we announce our next event focused on helping you craft the perfect resume!

Over the last two weeks I've seen 800+ resumes from military-connected candidates and spoken with a dozen employers, here are the most common application issues we saw: 💡 "Manager" should not be listed as your desired role. While members of the military community have developed fantastic managerial skills, a manager in information technology is expected to have different knowledge than a manager in financial services. You should identify an industry and role of interest using actual job postings and hope that your experience with the requisite skills, or performance in the role allows you to assume a managerial position in that field. 💡 Filler words in professional summaries. However you feel about professional summaries (we have seen dueling opinions), they should be concise, clear summaries of your experience and education, and explain why you are the perfect person for the job. Having a two-paragraph professional summary packed with phrases like "results-oriented", "award-winning", and other fillers does not add value. I would hope we are all results-oriented. Instead, quantify what you can, cut down on the fillers, and aim for just a few sentences that convey why you are perfect for that specific job. 💡 Untranslated bullets. While it can be difficult to convey your military experience in understandable terms, you have to make an effort and get assistance if you find it too difficult. Listing solely your MOS as a job title, or having bullets jam-packed with niche acronyms will lead to confusion for recruiters. Recruiters should make an effort to understand your experience, but you need to make an effort to allow them to do so. 💡 Responsibility vs. Impact. It does not matter what you were responsible for, recruiters care about the impact you had and how the programs under your responsibility performed while you managed them. You can be responsible for a lot of things and have lackluster performance, you want to clearly show the impact that YOU made. To be a broken record, quantify your impact wherever possible. 💡 Finally, no one is hiring generalists. Be selective in the experience that you show and your professional summary. Read the job descriptions you are applying for and tailor your resume to that job. You would be surprised at how well you can translate your skills to match a certain role, but having bullets telling us how great of a human resources leader you are won't win you any points when applying for an analyst role in cyber security. Writing a resume is tough. However, you can seek resources, take advice, and iteratively improve your resume over time. It isn't impossible, it just takes some work. If you need some help with your resume, Boots to Books will be announcing an event in the next week to provide you with advice directly from an experienced recruiter, stay tuned for more! What would you add?   P.S. This image was generated by Canva's AI image generator if you can't tell by the funky fingers.

Recently, Boots to Books kicked off several scholarship classes, and we are delighted at the impact they are already having on military job seekers!   First, we opened our JET-P scholarship several weeks ago, a program exclusively for transitioning junior enlisted service members where, over the course of 8 weeks, the individuals complete training, a certification, networking calls, and resume reviews at no cost to them! Second, after announcing our partnership with Google, our team welcomed a group of students for the Google Career Certificates in topics ranging from cybersecurity to project management, and those students will complete their training and receive access to career resources at no cost. To be candid, our team feels absolutely blessed to have the opportunity to support our military community like this, and messages such as the one below reinvigorate, and enlarge the fire that burns within all of us.   If you feel that same fire to support the military community, consider supporting Boots to Books! Anything helps the programs grow, and we even have a monthly donor option where, if you sacrificed Starbucks for a day a month and donated it, it would make a monumental difference over time. If you are an individual or a company interested in supporting, or hiring from the military community, shoot our team a message - we would love to chat!
