Preserving All of Bolsa Chica

About us

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust was formed in 1992 by a small group of Californians who believed that one of the last standing wetlands ecosystems in Southern California was worth preserving for future generations. The Land Trust now includes more than 5,000 members from throughout California and twenty other states. We are the preeminent organization dedicated to supporting the thriving Ecological Reserve and sacred cultural site at Bolsa Chica, that is a distinguished model for sustainability, coastal resiliency, and community engagement. The mission of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust is the acquisition, preservation, and restoration of all of Bolsa Chica and the education of the public to its natural wonders and cultural significance. The Land Trust conducts educational programs to build awareness about the role of the Bolsa Chica wetlands system in the natural and urban environment, and tell the story of its rich history. The Land Trust's Bolsa Chica Stewards have been conducting habitat restoration on the Bolsa Chica Mesa since 1996. Over 30,000 volunteers have spent thousands of hours replanting the mesa with over 100,000 native plants. Our on-site native plant nursery, the Growing Space, is a living laboratory and educational hub for growing native plants under the environmental conditions unique to Bolsa Chica. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust's research program invites academic researchers to explore the many possibilities for investigative studies at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. We are also working with the State Lands Commission, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and other state and Federal agencies to develop large scale restoration plans and secure significant funding for the work that needs to be done to protect the fragile habitats at Bolsa Chica.
