Cooking as a family is a great way to connect as a family. Not only does it bring everyone together, it’s also a chance to learn new recipes, talk and just have fun. Plus, kids who cook are more likely to appreciate healthy foods and try new things! For July’s Wellness Wednesday segments, we’re showcasing healthy recipes from Mango Haus that you will want to make with loved ones. Catch up on any Wellness Wednesday segments at https://lnkd.in/gFBbCqyN. Thank you to Adventist Health Kern County and KGET-TV 17 for partnering on this series! #EatWisely #PlantSlant #BZPBakersfield #LiveLongerBetter

For several days, the community surrounding Shirley Lane Elementary School in East Bakersfield has been without clean tap water. We heard the call for help. Partnering with Adventist Health Kern County, Kern Health Systems and Kern Family Health Care, we purchased cases of fruit and healthy snacks to be distributed to impacted families. We join a growing list of partners like Clinica Sierra Vista and CAPK who have assisted with resources. If you would like to help, volunteers are asked to be at Shirley Lane Elementary School at one of the times listed below. Volunteers will either stay at the campus to hand out items or be sent to deliver items to families in the impacted neighborhoods. 📅 June 29 and June 30 ⏰ 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. 📍 Shirley Lane Elementary School, 6714 Shirley Lane, 93307 📅 July 1 ⏰ 4-7 p.m. 📍 Shirley Lane Elementary School, 6714 Shirley Lane, 93307 #Volunteer #BetterTogether #Community #LiveLongerBetter

Thank you to United Way of Central Eastern California for having us at their 33rd Annual Community Professional Development Conference! Extremely proud of Karina Funez, MPH for representing at the panel discussion on social determinants of health. 👏🏽👏🏽 I had the opportunity to host a workshop on our work and how it directly impacts the SDOH factors of Social Connectedness, Physical Environment, and Policy. Honored to have been part of the group of workshop presenters including my amazing friends Traco Matthews, MBA and Bob Meadows 💙. Kudos to United Way and their team on a great event!

We’re excited to announce that Mt. Vernon Elementary School in the Bakersfield City School District is Bakersfield’s latest Blue Zones Project Approved School! Since opening in 1940, Mt. Vernon Elementary and its staff have worked hard to meet the needs of each child that has come through the doors. The school’s taken that commitment one step further by implementing new practices that will only enhance the well-being of its students and staff. Here’s a snapshot of the amazing strides the school made: 🚌 Successfully hosted 2 Walking School Bus events and have plans to host more next school year 📆 Launched an attendance campaign and three classrooms participated in a BZP spin art activity 🏫 Updated cafeteria posters featuring their very own students, 🚭 Added no smoking signs as a reminder that Mt. Vernon is a smoke free campus, and 🥦 Have plans to expand its school garden from the current hydroponics system to an outdoor raised garden bed #Celebration #Communitypartnership #School #LiveLongerBetter #BZPBakersfield

Congrats to The 18hundred for becoming the latest Blue Zones Project Approved Restaurant in Bakersfield! A huge thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this milestone at the 18hundred’s historic Chester Avenue location. If you're looking for a unique downtown eatery, be sure to stop by for their Black Bean Burger and a slice of vegan carrot cake - both BZP inspired dishes! #Celebration #EatWisely #PlantSlant #BZPBakersfield #Community #LiveLongerBetter

One of our core principles is improving local infrastructure to help make it easier and more accessible for everyone to make healthier choices. On June 18, our policy team met with community members in the Greenfield area to discuss improvements they would like to see in their neighborhood to increase safety and advocate for the changes that they want to see.

McKinley Elementary School is one step closer to having its own nature trail on its campus! The Greater Bakersfield Chamber's Leadership Bakersfield Team 3 hosted a clean-up event on June 15. Dozens of volunteers spent the morning clearing debris and green waste to help make way for the future trail. We're excited to play a small role in helping with this project that will provide future outlets to encourage local students to move naturally.
