This week, members of the #BCBSRI Supplier Diversity Steering Committee learned more about furthering supplier diversity through diversity in our organization. They attended the Business Diversity Leadership Summit that was presented by the National Minority Supplier Development Council. Participants discussed best practices to increase diverse suppliers and create a supplier diversity mindset throughout the company. Our team can use these ideas to boost our Supplier Diversity program as well as enrich #DEIB within our organization.

About us
At Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI), we know that health is more than what happens at the doctor’s office. Our vision is to improve health and well-being by leading access to high-quality, affordable, and equitable care. That means focusing on innovation, from opening retail stores across the state to expanding access to behavioral health services to helping address food insecurity among our neighbors. BCBSRI is connected nationwide as an organization of 36 independent Blues plans, working locally and together to transform care from the ground up and serve members wherever they are. Whether you're an individual looking to join our team or an employer looking to protect your employees' health, let's work together to make a difference. We know that Rhode Islanders’ well-being is influenced by where they grow up, live, and work—and that significant disparities exist, even in our small state. To help our communities thrive, we collaborated with providers, community-based organizations, and our members to work toward a healthcare system that is fair for everyone. As part of our continuing commitment to support healthcare practitioners and streamline patient access to care, we’re eliminating nearly 65% of prior authorization requirements for primary care providers (PCPs) by early 2025. Prior authorization, which requires doctors to obtain approval from health insurers before providing certain medical services, helps ensure that patients are receiving appropriate, safe, and cost-effective care. But it has been cited nationally as contributing to unnecessary delays and frustrations for both providers and patients. This initiative aligns with the work of the Rhode Island Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner, which issued a report on primary care last year that called for significant reductions in the administration burden of PCPs. Our efforts to streamline prior authorization will continue in partnership with healthcare leaders across the state, and details will be shared with our network of PCPs and members in the coming months. The #RILifeIndex has shown us that Rhode Islanders perceive significant barriers between themselves and affordable, safe housing. We’ve heard from our neighbors through this statewide survey, and these results are guiding our community investments to help them achieve better health and well-being. And we know that for many, this starts with access to housing. In this Boston Globe Media op-ed, Jeanne Cola, Senior Executive Director of the Rhode Island office of Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), highlights the grant we’ve awarded to LISC to support the pre-development of their newest housing development.
