The London Landmarks Half Marathon 2025 ballot results were announced today! Did you get a place? Frank ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon 2024 in memory of his mother and shares his story and experience on the day with us. “My mother, Helen, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in early December 2017. She died about two years later, a week before Christmas, aged 54. This all came as a shock as we were hopeful that her blood cancer would be life-limiting rather than life-ending. She was struggling with severe back pain for a few weeks, we now realise that that was symptomatic of her bones breaking down and becoming weak, due to the blood cancer. She needed twice-weekly transfusions of fresh blood just to feel normal and I now continue to donate blood in her memory. I know that the work Blood Cancer UK does is important to improving lives and outcomes for people in similar positions to me, and I’m proud to support that in whatever small way I can. If you’ve never done a half marathon before, it’s much more achievable than you might imagine! And you should absolutely consider supporting Blood Cancer UK if you have a personal connection to the cause, as much as my family does.” Will you join Team Blood Cancer UK at this iconic half marathon and help bring us closer to a day where no lives are lost to blood cancer? This is Jude, one of our dedicated fundraising volunteers. She began volunteering for us after her husband Nige was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2016. Here’s why she volunteers in her own words “In those early weeks, I had to tell our seven-year-old that his dad might not come home, and that is a guilt that will never leave me. Volunteering for the charity was about keeping us together as a family, and my son even sold his sweets at school when he was younger to raise money for Blood Cancer UK. "Now eight years later and thanks to research, my son has finished his exams and his dad’s still here. I’m so proud of them both.” If you would like to join our fantastic team of community fundraising volunteers, please take a look at two exciting opportunities to support. We are currently recruiting for a Community Fundraising Volunteer and a Community Collection Volunteer. To find out more about these roles, TAP the #linkinbio!

“When I was first diagnosed with CLL everything felt alien to me - hospital visits, medical language, and how the illness would affect my life. I think this was partly because I found myself in a world where I felt very different to everyone around me.” Sarah, living with CLL talks about the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation when dealing with a blood cancer diagnosis 💬 “Back in 2011 hospital posters and information all felt very heterosexual and non-inclusive of the LGBTQI+ community, which phased me. I felt self-conscious and out of place. We’ve made progress in inclusivity and visibility, but I still feel part of a minority, and that I don’t fit the template. Reading patient stories often highlights ‘traditional’ family portrayals, making it hard for me to relate. I think this created a distance between me and the information, and sometimes made me feel more vulnerable. Blood Cancer UK provide such brilliant support, which helps overcome feelings of being in a minority. But I think visibility and diverse representation are key. Seeing relatable images and stories can help people feel less alone. It encourages people to talk more freely and confidently, enabling others to open up, and creating a stronger sense of community.” 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ If you identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and are interested in being involved in our work, or sharing your story like Sarah, we’d love to hear from you.
