Black Futures Lab is a vehicle for Black People and Black community-based organizations to build independent progressive
About us
The Black Futures Lab transforms Black communities into constituencies that wield independent, political power at the municipal, state, and federal level. The problems Black communities face are complex; the solutions to those problems require imagination, experimentation, and political power. The Black Futures Lab combines strategies that help us imagine the alternatives we deserve, while building political power at the local, state and national level to implement those alternatives.

Last month we kicked off our “We Got the Power” series, a 3-part training program focused on power-building and campaign planning. The inaugural cohort of over 15 partner organizations from across the country will participate in virtual and in-person sessions and will learn the foundations of organizing, how to build campaigns, and practical strategies and tactics to organize our communities. THIS is what building Black political power looks like!

🔊We’ve got some BIG news to share: In June of this year, Black Futures Lab’s Principal, Alicia Garza, will be stepping down from her role to join the JPB Foundation as Senior Vice President of Movement Infrastructure and Explorations. In her new role, Alicia will be responsible for moving resources and funding to build the movement we need and the movement our communities deserve. While we’re sad to see her go, this is a huge win for all of us and we couldn’t be prouder. Congratulations, Alicia! And from all of us here at the Lab, thank you for your vision, your leadership, and your service. We are excited to announce that Black Futures Lab’s Deputy Director, Kristin Powell, will steward the organization into its next era. An organizer and strategist, with over a decade of experience building power, we are thrilled to have Kristin at the helm to take us to the next level. Towards Power! Alicia’s full statement linked in BIO "Passing the Torch."
