Throughout our interactions with the systemic mastocytosis community, we have often heard that many feel unseen and unheard, underscoring the need for greater awareness of their significant physical, emotional, and social challenges. This heartfelt art program, created in partnership with my dear friend Jenna Benn Shersher, CEO/Founder of Twist Out Cancer, celebrates the strength and resilience of people living with SM. Our first exhibit last week was incredibly moving, filled with powerful stories and art that touched us all deeply. We are so proud of this program and grateful to all the participants for sharing their inspiring stories, helping us raise awareness and empower others. Our country has a maternal health crisis. With rising maternal death rates and steep challenges to maternal health equity, it’s critical we advocate for high quality, accessible health care for all mothers – both physical and mental. Since it’s National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (#NMMHAM), I want to spotlight the essential work of my Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) colleagues Sinead Hunt and Andrea Price-Carter, MPA who are working to reduce health disparities by leading AAMC’s maternal health advocacy agenda, which includes a focus on mental and behavioral health. AAMC recently published their recommendation to address the #MaternalHealth crisis and advance birthing equity which includes suggestions to improve mental and behavioral health care. 🌸 Just had my first mammogram and I wanted to share my experience and why it's so important. I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect and I'm not too sure about my family history. During the mammogram, I learned that cysts are pretty normal—But more importantly, early detection is crucial. Mammograms can detect breast cancer up to two years before you might feel a lump, which can make a huge difference in treatment options and outcomes. This is 40… and taking charge of my health! Every day we have the opportunity to be better than we were the day before. At our fifth annual Novartis Day of Reflection, I challenged everyone to think of something they learned during the event, that they can start implementing to make this world better for all of us. Day of Reflection is when we come together as One Novartis to commemorate Juneteenth. This year, in partnership with BlackDoctor.org, we heard from incredible speakers and patients who shared their voices to educate us on what it takes to make health equity a reality. We connected with each other, exchanged the insights we gained and celebrated being together for such an important effort. Here are just some of my personal takeaways from the day that stuck with me: 1. Scientific research shows that it takes just 40 seconds to show compassion – to a patient or to anyone in your life – to make a real difference. Just asking someone what worries them the most and listening to their answer can reduce anxiety. Stephen Trzeciak, MD 2. Cultural competency is much more than just being able to speak the language of a patient. It is being able to understand their lived experiences, the pain points and the barriers that may keep people from being able to seek care. Joel Bervell 3. Think about inequities in terms of seven generations. The choices we make today potentially impact seven generations after us. What we do matters. [tag] Kurt Brenkus 4. Health equity remains a key focus across the health ecosystem, though priorities and practices continue to evolve. As an industry, we provide greater insights to what is going on in underserved populations. Partnerships are on the rise. It is our responsibility to build trust, tackle the structural barriers at the community level and continue this momentum. Jo Ann Saitta So much opportunity was created through our commitment to reimaging medicine together combined with our new learnings from Day of Reflection. I am excited to bring that knowledge to the programs we implement throughout the year, like our #BeaconofHope initiative, youth mentoring programs, ERGs, Disability and Veterans Summit and so much more.
