About us

Black Pharma is a Social Enterprise which has a vision to see a greater representation of black professionals across all business levels in the Pharmaceutical industry. We aim to facilitate industry access and professional development for talented black professionals to be successful in Pharma. Research has shown that only 7.3% of board directors on UK life science companies are racial minorities, and just 3% of employees in the average US biotech company are black. Pharma needs more diversity. We work to facilitate access to the industry through apprenticeships, student industry placements, graduate schemes/roles, entry-level roles and experienced roles. We do this by advising on available opportunities across the industry, as well as securing work experience and job opportunities with our Partners. In addition, we provide practical support with job applications, CVs and interview preparation, to ensure that talented black individuals are well positioned for success. At Black Pharma we are committed to ensuring that black professionals not only gain access to the industry, but that they are also well-equipped to successfully progress in their career. We do this by supporting career development through professional mentoring, consultations, webinars and trainings. Our mission is to ensure that every black professional has an equal opportunity to maximise their potential and make a positive impact.

Today, on Sickle Cell Awareness Day, we recognise the millions living with this chronic, debilitating disease that disproportionately affects minorities. As pharmaceutical professionals, we have a unique responsibility to champion research, development, and access to treatments for sickle cell disease. Sickle cell is the fastest growing genetic disorder in the UK. While it is present in people of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean descent, the disorder predominantly affects Black African and Black Caribbean communities, with individuals having a 1 in 500 chance of inheriting this condition, highlighting existing healthcare disparities. We need targeted research and outreach to ensure equitable access to treatment. While progress has been made, there's still a significant gap in effective therapies for sickle cell. Thank you again to John James OBE, Chief Executive of the Sickle Cell Society, who was our guest speaker at our Spring Networking Social back in March, and to all those who attended. By participating in industry events that champion diversity in healthcare research and supporting organisations focused on sickle cell research like the sickle cell society, we can make a difference! Let's leverage our expertise and influence to create a brighter future for those living with sickle cell disease. Share this post and use the hashtags #SickleCellAwarenessDay and #BlackPharmaMatters to show your support! We're building on our discussion about unconscious bias in pharma. But what fuels these invisible barriers? The lack of minority representation in leadership roles plays a significant role. Finding a definitive report solely focused on the demographics of leadership in the pharmaceutical industry can be challenging. However, several resources can help us piece together this information. A report found that whilst 44.9% of London’s NHS workforce come from a BME background, this diversity is not reflected at the leadership level, as only 14.7% of board positions are held by individuals from a BME background (NHS England, 2022) If your interested in finding out about the workplace demographic of a company, take a look at Annual Reports and Diversity & Inclusion Statements: Many pharmaceutical companies publish annual reports or dedicated diversity and inclusion statements on their websites. These reports often include breakdowns of their workforce demographics, including leadership positions. Go to their "Investor Relations" or "About Us" sections on their websites. Look for documents like "Annual Report," "Sustainability Report," or "Diversity & Inclusion Statement." Together, we can leverage this information to encourage companies to enhance diversity in leadership and help break down glass ceilings.
