Established in 1985, BKSK is a 4-partner, 40-person design firm based in New York City. As architects and scholars of the environment, both built and natural, we believe that great design has meaning and consequence. What we build, how we build it, and how it is used, matters. We create meaningful, thoughtful, and beautiful works of architecture. We are specialists in socially engaging, contextually appropriate, and environmentally conscious design. We have developed our expertise by truly listening to, and learning from, our clients, the community, and each other. Our projects include cultural, community, and educational institutions. Our practice has taught us that in the civic realm, we play an important role—not only as an architect but as an advocate for the building initiative. We work closely with institutions to articulate the importance of the project within the community, to donors, and to public agencies.

Last week we celebrated at the SARANY awards and received recognition for our new hotel project in Union Square. The transformation of 16 East 16th Street, on the edge of Union Square Park, involves ambitious restoration work and a substantial expansion of the 6-story R. H. Robertson-designed YWCA dormitory from 1891 into a new 9-story boutique 80,000 sf hotel and private club. Our restoration work for this project comes in two forms: 1) a faithful re-creation of the carved sandstone ground floor masonry, entirely removed in the 1950’s, and 2) a leap-of-faith “restoration/interpretation” of Robertson’s original design for a never-realized gabled 7th floor as a contemporary glass curtain wall and masonry screen utilizing ultra-high strength concrete. The screen, while evoking the detailing and depth of the historic ornamentation of the existing façade, also offers dramatic views from the interiors while concealing a 3-story addition. A Special Edition of Façade Tectonics SKINS a podcast produced by Facade Tectonics, was released on the Architectural Ceramics A Workshop just dropped. Episode 5 features an interview will Partner George Schieferdecker and Associate, William Russell who led the BKSK team in the 2022 workshop. Each conversation in this podcast series on the ACAW project teams helps tell the story of ACAW and the effect it is having on the field. 🌇A historical monument in the heart of the best-known city in the world rehabilitated and beautified with the Flexbrick® construction system. 〰️This is the Fila Gansevoort project, a complex of dilapidated low-rise commercial buildings located near the High Line, in the historic Gansevoort Market neighborhood, in New York. ➕Authorities, organizations and neighborhood communities participated in the decision-making of this project for which ✍🏻 BKSK Architects studio opted for Flexbrick®. ➖Which it was the result? A novel and notable application of ceramic pieces as a source of shade on the windows of the office building and also in the stair opening, with hanging brick curtains customized and installed with the innovative Fabrik by Flexbrick® prefabricated approach.
