"Wearable sensor technologies are revolutionizing health research, especially in chronic disease management, by producing real-time health data that can be transformed into digital biomarkers." However, systematic methods for collecting, interpreting, analyzing, and translating this data are lacking. Drawing from the BarKA-MS observational, longitudinal cohort study on physical rehabilitation in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), new research presents ten key insights into digital biomarker development. These lessons are intended to guide future research and teaching in utilizing wearable sensor data for digital biomarker development and chronic disease management. https://lnkd.in/gfGhr4J5 I #ChronicDiseaseManagement #DigitalBiomarkers #DigitalHealth Nature Portfolio

Virtual care has proven to be an effective tool, yielding high patient satisfaction without adverse safety events, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. Focused on remote radiation oncology care, the study revealed that patients rated virtual care as good or very good, with nearly all avoiding adverse safety events. The remote model significantly reduced travel burdens and costs for patients, with substantial mileage and cost savings reported. Among nearly 3,000 patients surveyed from 2020 to 2022, 98% expressed high satisfaction, and most safety events posed no harm to patients. Researchers emphasized the benefits of remote care, including enhanced access to clinicians, reduced travel, and significant cost savings. These findings suggest that virtual care will continue to play a vital role in chronic care management. https://lnkd.in/grMkeqTZ I #Oncology #RemotePatientMonitoring

Despite pharma’s emphasis on diversity in clinical trials, many are failing to meet these goals. A recent report from the Office of Inspector General, which reviewed 30 phase 3 trials funded by The National Institutes of Health, revealed that only two-thirds had inclusive enrollment plans. Even among those with such plans, most did not achieve their targets for underrepresented groups. To extend trial participation, many are looking towards scalable, comprehensive decentralized clinical trial solutions that enhance participant engagement and alleviate site burden. By building patient-centric diversified clinical trials, pharma can ensure more representative data, improve the efficacy and safety of treatments across different populations, and ultimately enhance health outcomes for all patients. https://lnkd.in/g-e4gGvM I #DecentralizedClinicalTrials #ClinicalTrialDiversity #DigitalClinicalTrials #HealthEquity PharmaVoice

Digital Health Technologies (DHTs) are increasingly contributing to the economic affordability and environmental sustainability of healthcare systems. By offering customized, adaptable care solutions, they have the potential to facilitate safer and more extensive home-based care while empowering patients to actively engage in their health management. However, substantial national differences exist in how these technologies are perceived, evaluated for regulatory approval, and reimbursed. Researchers are exploring the emerging phenomenon of grouping individual DHTs—each with its own clinical use case and regulatory approval—into packages designed to perform specific clinical tasks in defined settings. https://lnkd.in/ech-f7Hp I #DigitalHealth #RemotePatientMonitoring #VirtualCare #HealthcareInnovation

A new survey from EY’s suggests that digital health technologies are starting to yield strong results for payers. Ernst & Young LLP announced the results of a survey it conducted amongst health insurance executives, revealing that nearly four out of five insurance leaders acknowledge that virtual care has not only bridged the distance between members and providers but has also made care more affordable for members. https://lnkd.in/dx_rWqnC I #DigitalHealth #HealthcareCosts #VirtualCare

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) can improve clinical outcomes by extending care beyond hospitals, but its growth is hindered by low reimbursement. A report by the Bipartisan Policy Center outlines strategies to address this issue, including collaborating with medical societies to determine optimal coverage, clarifying policies, and developing new billing codes. It also suggests that Congress request the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) evaluate RPM’s impact on clinical outcomes and costs. These recommendations aim to advance RPM, particularly for smaller hospitals and underserved populations with limited resources. https://bit.ly/4emlD80 I #RemotePatientMonitoring #VirtualCare #CareAtHome #DigitalHealth HealthLeaders
