Not only are the tragic pedestrian and cyclist deaths of the last week unacceptable, they were PREVENTABLE. We call on Council President Johnson, the rest of City Council, and Mayor Parker to fully fund Vision Zero so that protected bike lanes across the city can be upgraded with permanent materials that will move the city toward the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities by 2050. Philadelphians deserve safe streets. Our elected officials must stop dragging their feet and commit to saving lives through action, not just words. Part of our effort to hold the City accountable to meeting Philadelphia’s Vision Zero goals includes analyzing fatal crash data throughout the year. The good news: overall traffic deaths are down in the first six months of 2024 compared to the previous four years. The bad news: the percentage of pedestrian deaths has gone up. What can the City do? The answer remains the same: better, safer infrastructure and consistent enforcement of laws governing dangerous driving behavior. Last week, City Council passed a bill enabling automated speed cameras on the entire length of Route 611/Broad Street. We applaud the swift work done by the office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems, Philadelphia Parking Authority, PennDOT, Mayor Parker, Council Member Squilla and all of City Council who passed this legislation unanimously. The goal of this legislation is not to raise revenue but to change driver behavior. We look forward to seeing this technology save lives on more dangerous roads throughout Philadelphia. #VisionZeroPHL #VisionZero https://lnkd.in/e8gyX5ma
Automated Speed Cameras will be expanded to Broad Street
