BCNC is proud to announce that we've received a grant from the The Asian Community Fund at the Boston Foundation health support services. We are thankful to be a part of the Boston Foundation's AAPI Mental Health Collaborative. The grant will go towards supporting the work of BCNC Family Services. Since 2006, BCNC has been providing culturally competent and linguistically accessible behavioral and mental health support services to Chinese speaking immigrants through Family Services. BCNC helps immigrant families, including families with children with special needs, cope with challenging issues and adjust to their new lives in the United States by providing parent education, case management, counseling and support services, and community engagement. In July, BCNC youths visited Sensata Technologies, a leading industrial technology company specializing in sensors and sensor-based solutions. Thanks to the enthusiastic insights from Sensata's staff, our students gained invaluable exposure to corporate culture and explored diverse career paths. They also had the opportunity to visit the state-of-the-art technology lab. In addition, we are grateful to Sensata Technologies for their generous $1,000 award in support of the Youth Program. Company site visits are part of the Youth Employment Program that provides high school youths with workforce skills while working and participating in professional development workshops. Asians need culturally-tailored mental health training program to reduce stigma and to increase service utilization! "It’s important to have some type of training or education for the community about systemic issues in America, the injustices that’s happening to kind of break the myth, like the model minority myth.” (Asian community member) Check our the paper at BMC Psychiatry, collaboration with Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Asian Women for Health, Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI): https://lnkd.in/gjzHhT5a

Shiyan, a Level 4 student from Guangdong, China, found a community at BCNC after she moved to Quincy with her family at the age of 18. “After a year at BCNC, I have improved my oral English a lot and feel much more confident in daily conversations, which is significant progress for me. The classes on American history and culture also helped me adapt to life in the US. Additionally, classmates from different countries speaking in class taught me about the diversity of the culture in the world,” Shiyan shared. BCNC offers 5 levels of free English classes in Boston and Quincy that teach the language and skills needed for everyday life, jobs, and college. We are now accepting applications for the September 2024 - June 2025 classes. In July and August, we will contact applicants for testing and interviews. Please understand that some of classes may have long waitlists. Read more and apply at https://bcnc.net/esol

"BCNC is a wonderful organization providing services for my family. It helped us build a new life.” - Fanny, BCNC Adult Education Graduate and Parent. Meet Fanny, a dedicated participant at BCNC with a remarkable journey. When Fanny first arrived in the U.S., English was entirely unfamiliar to her. Overcoming the daunting language barrier proved so challenging that she initially returned to China. Fanny eventually decided to return to the U.S. and came to BCNC for support. Because of our family-centered approach, BCNC is able to support Fanny and her whole family. Read and watch Fanny's interview at https://lnkd.in/esTgwVXN

At the end of June, students, volunteers, staff, and community members gathered for the 2024 Adult Education End of Year Celebration to honor the achievements of 249 adult students. The English Classes for College & Career Readiness program in Boston and Quincy, funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, offers 5 levels, from introduction to English to professional and technical English for career advancement. Special thanks to Tim Cahill, President of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce and member of BCNC Quincy's Leadership Council for attending to personally congratulate the students. Several students public shared the impact of the class on their lives. Roubens, a Level 3 student, encouraged his classmates: “We may not speak perfectly yet, but we are improving. Everyone has different experiences, but with determination, we made it!” Special thanks to all who make BCNC Adult Education & Workforce Initiatives successful: BCNC staff and volunteers, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, AmeriCorps, English for New Bostonians, Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), Massachusetts Gaming Commission, City of Boston Office Workforce Development, National Grid Foundation, Bank of America Charitable Foundation, State Street Foundation, and Comcast Foundation.
