When faced with poorly crafted regulations like the CMS staffing mandate, we want to ensure key decision-makers hear from the experts. That’s why several of our provider members traveled to Washington DC last week with our Government Relations Manager Eric Negomir, meeting with 10 of Washington’s 12 Congressional offices. Our advocates provided firsthand insights into how the mandate would restrict access to skilled nursing care, and highlighted consequences throughout the health care continuum. They warned of hospital backups and demonstrated how assisted living providers – especially those in rural areas, and who contract with Medicaid – would struggle to compete for staff, limiting their bed availability. While much work remains on the federal front, we acknowledge and honor the important progress made last week by WHCA advocates and look forward to continuing to build upon their momentum.
