⚡️ Empowering 450M Deaf/HH people with 24/7 accessibility. 💯 Best live captions in 1 click, in-person and online.

About us

We want to radically improve how we humans communicate with each other. Our first step at Ava is to empower 466M deaf and hard-of-hearing people to live in a fully accessible world. Every day, millions of people are excluded from conversations because they cannot hear what others say well. Our CEO Thibault grew up in a Deaf family & witnessed firsthand how the world was not accessible for them. Together with our CTO Skinner — deaf since age 2 — Thibault co-founded Ava to make live captioning of conversations as easy as turning on captions on TV. Our small but fast-growing team has reinvented AI-based speech recognition technology to be in service of people who need it the most. We dream of a 24/7 accessible world, without any communication barrier. In this pursuit, we're seeing how critical communication skills are, yet very far from ideal, to unleash our collective potential. This is for us the ultimate barrier we need to lift. Our belief is that well-designed technology can help everyone communicate and connect better — much more effectively & authentically — so humanity can achieve the greatest things together.

Founder & CEO @ Ava. Making communication barriers disappear since age 5. Forbes 30u30 MIT U35 Humanitarian

I spent the most part of my life being a voice for Deaf people. Born from Deaf parents, aka a “CODA” (Child Of Deaf Adult), I’ve always had engrained the mission to amplify the voices of these who aren’t heard. Today feels special, as we’re launching Ava Voice, our first step to do this at the scale of the 70M+ Deaf people whose voice need to be heard louder everyday. Extra special is seeing Steven Aquino, a fellow CODA, recognizing and explaining why it’s a game-changer in his Forbes column (link in comments). Thanks Steven! When my father spoke, people always thought he had a funny accent - maybe we were British? This always made us smile! Deaf people have an accent, yes, because the voice feedback loop (”I speak; I hear myself; I adjust how I speak”) is impaired by their not hearing themselves as well. As a result, a life laden with misunderstandings is often their day-to-day. In online meetings, my cofounder & CTO Skinner, like many Deaf people, needed to use the chat function to answer. But you’d always need someone else to “voice” for everyone else what Skinner typed. This was awkward and not inclusive, especially with lively debates not making room for this. So, we built him Ava Voice. He can choose his voice with a texture that really fits his character. It took a thoughtful onboarding to help millions of people who may have never heard voices at all to choose one that will convey their identity the best way possible, in an all-hearing world. With Ava Voice, what Skinner types is now heard by everyone in the room. The pointed joke as he smiles. The detailed Engineering update he thoughtfully prepared. His opinion, as a leader, is truly heard. And being heard is a right, that we nearly don’t give enough to Deaf people. They’re not in the boardrooms; the political platforms; your networking events; your dinners; nor taking the spotlight during your company’s all-hands meetings. Communication hurdles are inherent to their disability, which means that at every level of society, friction to hear their voice is compounding. It is ours to realize this imbalance and we can create and adopt inclusive technology & practices. Let’s all do the right thing going forward and help them be heard. Loud & clear 📣❤️📣
