The National Center for Explosives Training and Research consolidates ATF’s key explosives, fire, K-9 and national response operations. NCETR consists of the Explosives Enforcement and Training Division, the Explosives Research and Development Division, and the Fire Investigation and Arson Enforcement Division, all located in Huntsville, Alabama, at Redstone Arsenal, and the National Canine Division in Front Royal, Virginia. ATF is the only U.S. government agency with fire and arson investigation as part of its core mission, and the programs that support that mission are within NCETR. The main NCETR facility and explosives ranges make this center an extremely unique resource in the fight against explosives-related violent crime and counter-improvised explosives device effort. NCETR provides exceptional life-saving advanced explosives and arson training for our nation’s explosives handlers, bomb technicians, criminal investigators, and military explosives ordnance disposal operators. NCETR also oversees the National Response Teams, which respond to major bombings, explosions, and IED incidents, as well as major fire and arson incidents requiring resources beyond the capabilities of local and state partners. The Explosives Research and Development Division works to improve the safety and security of explosive storage, the safe disposal of explosives, and the investigation of explosive incidents. The ERDD supports ATF’s Office of Field Operations by researching and evaluating methods to prevent the criminal misuse of explosives and improvised explosive devices. ATF graduated its most recent class of furry crime fighting partners at the National Canine Division in Front Royal, Virginia, June 21, 2024. Seven labs, two golden and five black, achieved the highest success by graduating from the elite Search Enhanced Evidence K-9 (S.E.E.K.) course and join the exclusive club of K-9s who can detect up to 19,000 explosive compounds and work off leash. The course is a 24-week program. The first phase includes obedience training and explosives detection. The K-9s meet their handlers in the second phase and the pair become a team honing their combined tactical skills, while finishing the training together. These K-9s will be assigned to a field division with their Special Agent handler and live with their handler’s family. Many families flew or drove in for the graduation ceremony and to welcome their newest member.
