This past Friday, the world lost a great intellect, a giving heart, and an extraordinary soul. arXiv mourns the passing of Jim Simons, co-founder of the Simons Foundation. Jim’s brilliance, curiosity, and passion for science and mathematics were matched only by his generosity. Through both his work in mathematics and his philanthropy in the sciences, Jim has had an immeasurable impact on society as a whole, and on the scientific community in particular. arXiv is lucky and proud to have the Simons Foundation as one of our major funders. Jim’s generosity has helped support not only arXiv, but the millions of researchers who share and discover work on arXiv, substantially accelerating the pace of scientific advancement. Those of us who had the pleasure of working directly with Jim throughout our careers remember not only a genius, but a genuinely kind and hardworking man. Jim, simply put, made the world a better place. arXiv and the open science community are eternally grateful for his support, and we send our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. https://lnkd.in/edtRnP36

Big news for #accessibility in #research and #openscience: arXiv now offers #HTML versions of papers! arXiv’s goal is #equitableaccess to scientific research for all – and to achieve this, we have been working to make research papers more accessible for arXiv users with disabilities. We are pleased to announce that arXiv is now generating an HTML formatted version of all new papers, with an ultimate goal of eventually offering HTML versions of every paper on arXiv. The request to offer arXiv-hosted papers in HTML format comes directly from scientists with disabilities who face barriers to accessing the research they need. HTML formatted papers are more easily and accurately read by #screenreaders and other technologies, which can assist researchers with reading disabilities, including blindness, low vision, dyslexia, and more. Right now arXiv's HTML is in the “experimental” phase - converting formulas from LaTeX / TeX to HTML is complicated, and currently not every paper will render correctly. Researchers with disabilities have told arXiv that HTML is needed *now* for accessibility, and so we wanted to offer HTML as an option as quickly as possible, while we continue to work on improving conversions with the help of our community. Experimental HTML is a big step towards making science accessible to all. We want to thank all the arXiv users who have taken the time to fill out bug reports to help us improve this feature, as well as everyone who collaborated on arXiv’s pilot HTML Papers project, which includes The LaTeX Project and the LaTeXML team from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Want to learn more about accessibility in science? What's better than open science? Faster open science! arXiv is pleased to announce that we are now using Fastly to deliver content to arXiv users faster. Fastly was kind enough to offer a generous in-kind donation of their Content Delivery Network (CDN) services to arXiv. On Monday, December 18th, arXiv officially turned on this service for all content served from arXiv.org. That includes our home page, listings, abstracts, and papers. Fastly uses around 100 POPs (Point of Presence) around the world to cache and deliver content - you can check out their POP map here: https://lnkd.in/dXTC9i9i. This network makes it so content is delivered to end-users at high speeds. Right now, about 60% of the web requests to arxiv.org are being served from a local Fastly POP, improving performance and taking load off the arXiv servers. In particular, users outside of North America should see performance improvement, which is important as arXiv serves a global scientific community. As we continue to grow and see high rates of submissions, we're always looking to make arXiv better for the community we serve - if you've got feedback for us, you can leave a comment on our blog (blog.arxiv.org) or file a bug report using our support portal (https://lnkd.in/ebTU6yyn)
