Historic Announcement - AAIUH expands its mission to increase health equity! We're thrilled to share groundbreaking news! Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health's (AAIUH) Health Science Academy's (HSA) high school programming, grades 9-12, has made history as being part of the first cohort of afterschool programs to receive accreditation from the Middle States Association' Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS)! AAIUH accomplished this goal through its membership as a STEM PUSH Pre-College STEM Program! HSA has served over a thousand high school students since its inception in 1994. HSA celebrates their 30th anniversary this fall. This remarkable achievement of MSA-CESS accreditation recognizes the Institute’s commitment to excellence in STEM education and our dedication to broadening the participation of underrepresented minorities in the field of health science and healthcare. We're proud to have aligned our program with the STEM PUSH evidence-based and equity-aligned quality standards, ensuring that we provide the highest quality education to all students. Join us in celebrating this monumental milestone as we continue to empower future generations of healthcare professionals and STEM leaders! #AccreditationAchieved #STEMEducation #EquityInSTEM #ArthurAsheInstituteforUrbanHealth

About us
Located in the heart of Brooklyn, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health utilizes a model of community health empowerment and engagement to promote health equity and social justice through strategic partnerships, innovative community-based health promotion & research programs, and preparation of a more diverse and inclusive workforce of health professionals. Founded in 1992 by tennis legend and civil rights pioneer Arthur Ashe, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health (AAIUH) is a Brooklyn-based community health empowerment & education agency that reaches thousands of individuals per year. AAIUH's mission is to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for underserved group; its vision is the development of an equitable healthcare system that reduces health disparities, improves outcomes for underserved communities of color, and better prepares a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce. AAIUH's services remain informed by Mr. Ashe's values of justice, service, inclusiveness, and excellence. AAIUH is a leader in developing and replicating programs that promote community health outcomes. AAIUH' s Community Outreach Programs provide health education and advocacy programming at nontraditional venues (e.g., barbershops and hair salons), our participation in the Brooklyn Health Disparities Center (in partnership with SUNY Downstate Medical Center and the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President) aims to eradicate health disparities affecting minority communities in Brooklyn, and our Health Science Academy exposes students of color to the health sciences in order to increase the representation of women and people of color in the healthcare and health sciences fields.

I'm two days late with this post but I wanted to take the time to highlight the HIV/AIDS initiative I have been leading at the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health with my team, in honor of Arthur Ashe himself and World AIDS Day. My team and I have been deploying our updated culturally tailored HIV education program in our partnered barbershops and hair salons across Brooklyn. We aim to continue the work of destigmatizing HIV in our black communities by leading conversations centered around mental health/stigma, PReP/PEP, & Hepatitis C to name a few. The positive feedback we have been getting shows me that what we're doing is instrumental in our community, and the need to bring awareness on PReP/PEP in black communities!

Reflecting on World AIDS Day, I’m inspired by our collective resilience. It's a day to honor those living with HIV/AIDS and remember those we've lost, reminding me of the vital work that still awaits in public health. This day holds a special significance for me, having dedicated the majority of my professional life to this cause. It's a time to honor the resilience and courage of those living with HIV/AIDS and to remember those who have lost their lives to this devastating disease. My journey in this field has been one of profound learning, challenges, and, most importantly, hope. The progress we have made is a testament to the power of dedicated research, compassionate care, and unwavering advocacy. Yet, as we commemorate this day, we are reminded of the work that still lies ahead Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with remarkable organizations at federal, state, and local levels. Each of these institutions has played a pivotal role in advancing HIV/AIDS prevention and care. I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to: Christel Hyden, Ed.D. CAMBA GMHC NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & MENTAL Centers for Disease Control and Prevention NJ Department of Health Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health STAR Program Albert Einstein College of Medicine Their dedication and groundbreaking work have not only contributed to the betterment of countless lives but also inspired professionals like myself to strive for excellence in this field. On this World AIDS Day, let’s renew our commitment to eradicating HIV/AIDS. Let’s continue to break down barriers, educate, and advocate for those in need. The journey is far from over, but together, we can achieve a world free of HIV/AIDS. #WorldAIDSDay #PublicHealth #HIVPrevention #Solidarity #Awareness #HealthEquity
