Dutch genre scenes often show women reading or writing love letters, but in this painting, a woman reads a newspaper. 📰 This unusual subject matter reflects women’s high degree of literacy in the Dutch Republic as well as an interest in current events beyond the home. Baltimore Museum of Art curator Lara Yeager-Crasselt gives us the scoop on this work on loan from The Leiden Collection, New York. . 🖼️ Frans van Mieris, “Woman Reading and a Man Seated at a Table,” probably 1676, The Leiden Collection, New York. 📷 Installation views of the Baltimore Museum of Art’s European Wing. #Baltimore #Maryland #Curator #Artist #Interview #EuropeanArt

Artist Joyce J. Scott responds to adversity by embracing the trickster’s way. In this clip, she shares how her work messes with stereotypes. For Scott, laughter—even the uncomfortable kind—can allow vulnerability in examining stereotypes and their negative consequences. Her humor, wit, and exaggeration work to expose and criticize injustice. 🎟️ TWO MORE WEEKS! Thunder Thighs, we salute you! 🌟 In 1985, artist Joyce J. Scott and actor-director Kay Lawal-Muhammad created the Thunder Thigh Revue. Inspired by early 20th-century vaudeville variety shows, they participated in a new wave of contemporary women-led comedy. Thunder Thigh Revue addressed politics with slapstick hilarity interlaced with poignant emotion. 💭 Fun Fact: The scrapbook seen in this video is a collection of memorabilia from the Thunder Thigh Revue put together by Kay Lawal-Muhammad’s mother. 🎟️ Learn more about the Thunder Thigh Revue in Joyce J. Cecilia Wichmann and Leslie Rose are two of the curators behind Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams. Here, they explore “Buddha Transcends Field of Dead Fire,” the very first work visitors encounter in the exhibition. In Scott’s personal pantheon, informed by her world travels and recognition that “there are a lot of Black Buddhists around,” she has developed her own concept of the Buddha, unaligned with specific religious or spiritual traditions. 🎟️ See the exhibition before it CLOSES on Sunday, July 14.
