Franz Kraus Production Award winner "Sonnenplätze" ("Places in the Sun") was shot by DP Tobias Blickle and had its world premiere at Filmfest Munich. Tobias comments in our interview on the shoot: "The great thing about the #ALEXAMiniLF is that it is so versatile and reliable. We wanted lenses that provided a natural and soft picture. With an open aperture, the #Moviecams are almost impressionistic in their effect, especially at night when there are light sources in the frame. For night scenes we added some #DNALF focal lengths to the Moviecams. " The award winning Maverick Film production and turbulent comedy between old conflicts and new opportunities by writer/director Aaron Arens, producers Tristan Bähre and Philipp Maron, and cinematographer Tobias Blickle is playing one more time on Saturday at the 2024 Munich Film Festival. How did cinematographers Jonathan Freeman ASC and Richard Donnelly ISC set the look on the first two episodes of sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem”? The eight-part Netflix series was captured on the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF, combined with a mix of ARRI Rental’s exclusive ALFA anamorphic and DNA LF lenses to distinguish between realities. Earlier this year, director Ethan Coen released "Drive-Away Dolls." The comedy follows two young women, Jamie and Marian, who journey to Florida by signing into a transport car, with Jamie focused on visiting as many lesbian bars to help Marian have more sex after a breakup. However, both are unaware of the car trunk's valuables and the people after it. Ari Wegner ACS, ASC created a distinct visual appeal with an oversaturated look on the ARRI #ALEXA35 and Ultra Prime lenses. “Dovecote” is a short film set on the day an anonymous prisoner is released from Giudecca prison to pursue a journey of self-discovery and existential reflection. It was directed by Marco Perego and stars Zoe Saldaña, with cinematography by Javier Julia ADF, who comments: “We decided to work in 4:3 format in color for the introduction and epilogue that take place on the outskirts of Venice, but then expand our vision to 2.2:1 in black and white for scenes inside the prison. The absence of color forces us to focus on the emotions and details of the story. Through a long continuous shot, we emerge into the prison experience in real time. Lighting possibilities in the prison environments were limited, so the #ALEXAMiniLFMonochrome was the perfect tool. Its sensitivity and wide dynamic range allowed me to capture images with great richness of detail and emotional depth. This was complemented by #ARRIRental’s #DNALF lenses, which have a beautiful combination of clarity and sharpness, but also a creamy smoothness that lends the image a daydream quality. We mainly used the 21 mm and 25 mm focal lengths, allowing viewers to connect with the lead character in a visceral way.” Realized with the invaluable contributions of TRINITY/Steadicam operator Matías Mesa, “Dovecote” is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and an exploration of the limits of freedom and identity. Screening now in the Venice Biennale 2024, at the Vatican Pavilion in Giudecca Women’s Prison, Venice. Photos: Lorenzo Sisti

After his nine-year-old son, Edgar, goes missing in New York, unhappily married puppeteer Vincent spirals into increasingly volatile behavior, alienating his friends, family, and coworkers. Struggling with substance abuse, grief-stricken Vincent becomes convinced that he can reunite with Edgar with the help of his seven-foot-tall puppet, Eric. Cinematographer Benedict Spence BSC shot the moving Netflix mini-series “Eric” from director Lucy Forbes with camera equipment including the ALEXA 35 from ARRI Rental Budapest. In an interview with ARRI, he comments… “I had at least another stop in the shadows with the ALEXA 35…There are always times in the grade when you want to lift someone’s face in the darkness, so having that extra information is very useful. In particular I loved the camera’s ES [Enhanced Sensitivity] mode. There were moments on set where Lucy or I wanted to shoot a little bit of 50 fps when it hadn’t been planned, or where we wanted to use a zoom but the lighting hadn’t been set up for the slower T-stop of a zoom. ES mode gives you those extra stops of sensitivity, allowing me to say yes to a creative request, instead of no.” Tap the link below to read the full interview with Benedict Spence BSC and colorist Toby Tomkins!
