😬😬Accidents happen! 😬😬 For new and experienced perioperative nurses, the important thing to remember is how to work together to recover, and how to avoid them in the future. Thanks so much to Meg Vance for sharing her story of accidentally disengaging a custom-made graft during an endovascular aneurysm repair. While it was 😰😰 absolute panic mode 😰😰 in the OR at first, the team worked together to ensure that the patient received a graft that was working properly. Meg’s story emphasizes how important it is to ask questions and why you need confidence to ask questions during a procedure. 👉Her advice: “Be comfortable enough to be uncomfortable and ask for help.” 👉A new prep process and a busy OR with lots of distractions led to the error, while quick thinking and a creative solution to use a secondary graft saved the day. 👇🏽Tell us in the comments about a time that you had to ask a difficult question in the OR. Benefits of Using QR Codes for Attendance There are several advantages to using QR codes for perioperative attendance compared to traditional methods like paper sign-in sheets: • Efficiency: Scanning a code takes seconds, significantly reducing the time spent taking attendance compared to manually collecting signatures. • Accuracy: QR codes eliminate the risk of errors from illegible handwriting or missed sign-ins. • Real-Time Data: Attendance data is captured electronically, allowing for real-time tracking and reporting. • Reduced Paperwork: Eliminates the need for paper sign-in sheets, which can be misplaced or lost. Additional Considerations • Smartphone Access: All team members would need smartphones with functioning cameras and internet access (if the QR code links to an online system). • System Integration: The QR code system should ideally integrate with attendance tracking software to automatically populate data. • Security: Ensure the QR code system has appropriate security measures in place to protect patient privacy. Overall, QR codes offer a modern and efficient way for perioperative nurses to manage attendance during inservice seminars. Clinical educators, are attendance-taking processes causing delays during your inservice seminars? Have you explored the use of QR codes as a solution? Share your insights! Can QR Codes streamline your seminars? https://lnkd.in/g55Pzbfq Not a member? Join AORN for full access. 📸 📸 Ponle Olubajo stands before a QR code sign-in sheet. Step aside, Swifties. ERAS has a whole new meaning. 👩🏼⚕️🎤 Let's be honest, post-surgery recovery isn't always "Delicate." Patients can’t just “Shake It Off.” They might be feeling more "Love Story" heartbreak than "Sparks Fly" excitement. (Enough puns?) 🎉 Introducing ERAS: It's not a concert tour, it's an awesome program designed to help patients recover faster and feel better after surgery. Think of it as the red carpet to a smoother recovery journey! Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are patient-centered, evidence-based, interdisciplinary pathways to help surgical patients achieve early recovery. This isn't just about feeling good, it's about getting patients healthy - because nobody wants a "Bad Blood" situation with their recovery! ERAS helps with things like: • Pre-Surgery Prep: Quitting smoking, eating healthy, and exercising can all help your body bounce back stronger. • Pain Management: ERAS uses alternative methods like regional anesthesia to keep you comfortable without the "heavy stuff." • Early Movement: Moving early after surgery helps prevent complications and gets you back to your normal routine faster. Ditch the "Fearless" era worries and embrace a smoother recovery with ERAS! This might just be the key to a "Story of Us" with a happy ending for you and your patients. Are you using ERAS? How’s it going? Also, did you attend the ERAS tour 😉? Let us know below 👇🏽 All about ERAS: https://bit.ly/3zVqqxC #ERAS #surgeryrecovery #AORNStitch #surgerylife #perioperative #ORlife #nurse #nurselife #nurses #nursing #ORnurse

Older adult patients are at an increased risk of disruptions in temperature regulation—and at risk for unplanned perioperative hypothermia. This happens when body temperature drops to less than 36.0° C (96.8° F) because of decreased muscle mass, vascular reactivity, and metabolic heat production. How can perioperative team members mitigate this risk? They can use active warming methods, passive insulation methods, or a combination of both. • Active warming methods should be implemented in any phase of care to prevent or treat hypothermia. • A variety of active warming methods can be used, including forced-air warming devices, radiant warmers, warmed anesthesia and insufflation gases, and warmed IV and irrigation fluids. • Passive insulation methods also can be used during any phase of care to prevent heat loss, but they are not a treatment for hypothermia. Passive insulation methods include the use of cotton blankets, plastic sheeting, surgical drapes, and thermal clothing. In this edition of Back to Basics 2.0, Zach Swartz, MHI, BSN, RN, CNOR, takes a deep dive into best practices in caring for older adults. After reading, be sure to earn your contact hours by completing the learner evaluation! Let us know: did you learn anything new from this Back to Basics 2.0? 🦶Outpatient foot and ankle surgery is on the rise at ASCs🦶 Performing surgeries in an outpatient setting is becoming increasingly common, with advancements in technique and reimbursement trends. This is especially true for foot and ankle procedures, which are often well-suited for same-day care at Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). 👣What Procedures Are Moving Outpatient? The types of foot and ankle surgeries transitioning to ASCs have expanded significantly. Previously limited to simpler procedures like bunions and hammertoes, ASCs are now equipped to handle complex reconstructions, ankle replacements, and even some fractures. 🗝️Key Considerations for ASCs While transitioning to outpatient foot and ankle surgery offers advantages, ASCs need to make some adjustments to accommodate this subspecialty. 1️⃣ Equipment: Fluoroscopy using C-arm machines is essential for many procedures. 2️⃣ Instrumentation: Having small-bone power tools and some foot and ankle-specific instruments is necessary. 3️⃣ Staffing: A skilled surgical team including a first assistant, scrub nurse, circulating nurse, and anesthesia provider is needed. 📋Patient Selection and Post-Operative Care Careful patient selection is crucial for successful outpatient surgery. Medically unstable patients or those with uncontrolled chronic conditions may still be better suited for hospital care. ASCs need to ensure robust post-operative protocols to address potential issues like infection, falls, and blood clots. Physical therapy plays a vital role in recovery and is often a key factor allowing for outpatient care. 🔮The Future of Outpatient Foot and Ankle Surgery With ongoing advancements in technology and techniques, the future of foot and ankle surgery is increasingly outpatient. This shift benefits patients, surgeons, and the healthcare system as a whole. https://lnkd.in/gfaPYAPU #perioperativenursing #ASC #perioperative #periop #ornurse #nursing #nurselife #nurses #nurse #foothealth #anklepain
