There's a gap between theory and practice, risking superficial solutions. We will explore how clear definitions, realistic assessments, multidisciplinary approaches, and comprehensive policy frameworks can overcome these challenges and ensure substantial sustainability outcomes. Lead discussants: Frank Figge, Kris Hartley Moderator: Anja Grüll Informed by: Julian Kirchherr ◽ In section 2, we explore circular business models (CBMs) and sustainability strategy from an organizational perspective. Purely closed-loop models must consider economic and energy factors, with full cost accounting to assess financial implications. We will discuss CBM implementation, define main types, support for circular startups, and how firms can innovate using collaboration, lifecycle thinking, and impact measurement for effective circular economy integration. We will explore advantages and challenges of the ecosystem approach, future trends, theoretical lenses for studying CE, strategies for mainstream journal inclusion, and the role of technology like digital platforms and IoT in creating and managing circular ecosystems. 🌍 Exciting new research on sustainability transitions in global interorganizational systems by Katrin Heucher and co-authors. Recent research article published in the Journal of International Management: "When Global is Not Enough: Applying a Paradox Lens to Sustainability Transitions in Interorganizational Systems". The study explores the complex tensions multinational enterprises (MNEs) and their business partners, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), face in navigating sustainability within global supply chains and networks. Focusing on the food packaging industry in Europe and China, we examined the shift to bio-based plastics. Key contributions include: - Conceptualizing potential breaking points: We identify potential breaking points in sustainability transitions within interorganizational systems, advocating for a glocal approach to paradox management. - Understanding chains of knotted tensions: We illustrate how these tensions form complex, knotted chains that MNEs and their partners must collaboratively address to achieve sustainability goals. 📢 New Study Alert! 📚 We're excited to announce the publication of Gerard (Gerry) Farias, Nancy E. Landrum, Christine Farias, and Isabella Krysa's paper, "Explorations in organized hypocrisy and a proposed direction for a sustainable future," in the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal. 🔍 This research investigates corporate hypocrisy as a major barrier to sustainability, proposing a typology of business behaviors to promote true and strong sustainability. The authors identify five business archetypes: business-as-usual, hypocritical pretender, hypocritical co-opter, responsible enterprise, and purposeful enterprise. Join our PDW on Environmental Sustainability and International Business at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in 2024. Saturday, Aug 10, 2024. Our panelists will discuss: * How can IB research contribute to environmental sustainability challenges? * What are the theoretical opportunities and challenges? * What are the methodological opportunities and challenges? In the second part of the PDW (30 min), our speakers will each lead a table where participants will join discussions. 📢 New Publication Alert! 🌿 We're thrilled to announce the publication of James D. and Nancy E. Landrum's paper, "Organizational sustainability schemes align with weak sustainability," in Business Strategy and the Environment. 🔍 This research addresses a gap in sustainability studies by evaluating business-internal sustainability practices. Analyzing 20 schemes through strong sustainability and sensemaking theories, it finds all align with weak sustainability, though five are notably advanced. The study provides empirical evidence of this alignment and stresses the need for schemes and practices to shift towards strong ecological sustainability.
