RIP Bob Newhart. I used to show this clip in media training sessions... Sometimes, especially when subject matter experts do media interviews, they don't do the important part - preparation (i.e., understanding the assignment), spending time watching previous interviews, asking for interview questions in advance and the other parts of media relations that can prove to be more fruitful than the actual interview itself. Of course, this clip is funny and the comedic timing of Bob Newhart will always be one of my favorite things. #mediatraining

With plenty of social media apps available today, finding the right mix to reach your target audience can be a challenge. It's important to start with knowing which social media platforms your audience uses. Trying to reach women 18-34, or younger audience in general? TikTok is a good bet. However, like its user base, the app is still young. You'll have broader ad targeting options and more limited options in terms of paid ads and analytics. Reaching out to mid-level managers in Seattle? Looking to drive business-to-business leads? LinkedIn is your go-to platform. It’s also the ideal platform to stretch your industry-knowledge muscle, positioning yourself or your business as a desirable expert. Looking to connect with adults 25 to 34 who live in urban areas? Looking to build your organization’s brand through visual storytelling on a platform with robust advertising tools? Then Instagram may be the place for you. Just make sure your content isn’t too promotional or your audience might be less likely to engage. How about retirees who live in rural areas? As one of the oldest social media apps around today, Facebook has the largest user base and is likely to be more effective for reaching an older audience. However, using one of the most popular social media apps for advertising means more competition to stand out. Your marketing mix will change depending on your audiences preferences on social media. Balance work and life: Everyone has to work to maintain the life we all want. This can include traveling, having a roof over our heads, eating/drinking water, etc. Sometimes, we work a lot without thinking about ourselves or our well-being. A balanced lifestyle ensures we can work and have time for whatever we want. Tips on balancing your life: 📅 Organize your week. Write down your plans weekly to stay on track with your work. ☕ Breaks between work are necessary because sometimes you lose track of time by working all day and never taking a break to eat, drink, or do anything else to ease your mind. 🏫 Setting boundaries is a must, especially if you have to set times with work, school, free time, etc. Clear and healthy boundaries will make your daily life easier. 🛏 Unplug and relax. When you're not working, disconnect from work-related emails and calls. Give yourself time to relax and enjoy activities outside of work. 🙌 Set personal goals. Make personal goals for what you want to achieve, such as creating healthy routines, having a new hobby, or exploring your neighborhood after work to clear your mind. These goals can give your life balance and fulfillment. 💕 Seek support. A support system is essential because the support can encourage you to go after your goals. Having support will make you feel like nothing can’t stop you from whatever you want to enjoy your life. A cautionary tale! For those who don’t remember: In February 2023, Vanderbilt University sent out a message of comfort to its students following the tragic shooting that took place at Michigan State University. The problem was, students could tell that certain paragraphs were written by ChatGPT. This approach was widely criticized for being insensitive, particularly given the gravity of the situation. The university later apologized for the use of AI in crafting the message, acknowledging the importance of a more human and thoughtful approach in crisis communications. Messages during crises need to be genuine and crafted with a deep understanding of the emotional and situational context. Sure, artificial intelligence is becoming a more widely accepted tool in the PR world, but it’s no replacement for emotional intelligence. Final takeaway: Beware of using AI in crisis communications!
