NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Crypto Scams Cryptocurrency has made many people very wealthy. There are more than 88,000 millionaires who have gotten rich through crypto investing. In fact, there are even 17 "crypto billionaires." But for every person who makes it big in the world of cryptocurrency, there are many times more who either never grow their investment or who lose money. In this episode of Privacy Files, Brian Tillman returns to the studio to help Rich make sense of the extremely complex environment of cryptocurrency. Brian runs through some examples of cryptocurrency scams with the goal of pinpointing the red flags to watch out for. Rich takes a more holistic view by examining the common question of whether or not cryptocurrency is actually a decentralized Ponzi scheme. This is an episode that covers many angles. On the fraud side, we look at a variety of frauds, from pig butchering scams to phishing attacks. Globally, we break down how cryptocurrency actually works to better understand what it actually is. Is cryptocurrency really a currency? Is it an unregistered security? Or, is cryptocurrency just a decentralized Ponzi scheme? The European Union is working on developing a universal digital identity system for citizens called the EU Digital Identity Wallet. Soon, Europeans will be able to download and use a free EU Digital Identity Wallet to access a variety of public and private services. The system works by relying on identity verification and authentication of other credentials stored in an app on their smartphone. The wallet will work both for ID checks online and in person. It’s also designed to serve as a digital repository for official documents, such as a driver’s license, medical prescriptions, educational qualifications, passports, etc. #identity #europe #digitalwallet #digitalidentity #verifiablecredentials

In this investigation, WIRED gives us a look at the Chula Vista Police Department's drone program, the first of its kind in the United States. It's a glimpse into what might be coming soon to a police department in your city. Since 2018, drones have crossed the skies of Chula Vista, California nearly 20,000 times. They are equipped with cameras and zoom lenses powerful enough to clearly capture faces and are constantly recording while in flight. These police drones have amassed hundreds of hours of video footage of Chula Vista's residents as their flight paths routinely take them over backyards and above public pools, high schools, hospitals, churches, mosques and immigration law firms. Privacy advocates contend that the extensive video footage recorded by the drones makes it difficult to discern between flights responding to specific incidents and mass surveillance from the air. Department secrecy around the recordings remains the subject of ongoing litigation. According to Wired, residents who encounter the drones report feeling constantly surveilled. Some have expressed a fear of spending time in their backyards. Others have expressed concern that this technology is being used to follow them down the street or spy on them while using the public pool. One resident says that he was so worried that the drones were harassing him that he visited the emergency room for severe depression and exhaustion. #drones #surveillance #spying #police #privacy #lawenforcement #tech
